Educators and careers leads/advisers, including members of the Career Development Institute (CDI), all have a part to play to ensure screen careers information is accessible for young people.

TV and Film was the most popular industry on the ERIC creative careers app in 2023, with 50% of users accessing relevant content, yet only 6% of young people feel a career in these industries is accessible to them. Perhaps that's why the creative industries were a hot topic at the Labour Party Conference recently, with Lisa Nandy, MP and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport saying: "We will put rocket boosters under tourism, film, gaming - growing creative industries in Sunderland, Blackpool, Birmingham and Dundee... so people in every part of our country have not just good jobs in their own community, but the chance to write the next chapter of our national story."

We know that young people across the UK are keener than ever to learn more about screen industry careers, and our work involves making these opportunities more visible and accessible to them.

Each month we're highlighting all the free events, resources and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities you'll need to help you and the young people you support learn more about careers in film, TV, games, animation and VFX. Looking ahead to November, there are heaps of careers-focused events taking place, but now is the time to sign up or register for them, before places fill up.

With over 355,000 free places booked for this November's Into Film Festival, and Discover! Creative Careers Week approaching fast (18-22 November 2024), there are plenty of opportunities for you to strengthen your careers programme and deepen your understanding of how to support screen careers conversations with young people.

If you're new to Into Film, all you need to access our free resources is an Into Film Account. Don't worry, it's completely free and only takes a moment to set up. Plus, you'll also gain access to hundreds of free curriculum-linked resources, further training opportunities, and with a Public Video Screening (PVS) Licence, hundreds of free films to stream safely and legally with Into Film+.

Step Into Screen Careers resources

Our brand-new Step into Screen Careers resources are an essential tool to help students understand the specific skills, roles, and challenges involved in dynamic fields such as film, TV, and games production.

This versatile series of activity sheets is perfect for engaging students in exploring career paths and building skills which are useful in the screen industries, and can be incorporated into career discussions, meetings with advisors, or existing lessons. The sheets are also suitable for students to use independently, allowing them to reflect on their skills and interests.

We'll be releasing more resources in the Step Into Screen Careers series in the coming weeks.

Careers Events at the Into Film Festival 2024
