The Peanuts is a franchise that I don't have much connection with and I never read the comics but I know the franchise exist. I barely remember that film when it came out as a kid and I thought it was okay but years went by I re-watched this film and I quite like it a lot! (I know this review doesn't sound like I love it but still). I don't love this film much as The Captain Underpants film but this movie is so much better then any other adaptions out there! This Century give us a lot of Dr.Seuss book adaptions and none of them are good in my opinion and some feels like a cash grab. Thankfully Blue Sky Studios manage to get it right, considering they made Horton Hears A Who (this movie is painfully mid in my opinion). But without a further-a-do let's get into it;
Animation: This movie and the Captain Underpants film is very stylised considering these movies are made before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is really saying something! The animation is incredible and perfectly catchers the comic and the little details like the lines when Woodstock is flying about and the thought bubbles of the characters and it shows the people behind it really cares of this franchise! If you aren't like a friend like me who isn't very picky and want to enjoy the vibe or feeling of it, that's fine you be you but the vibe of the film what bumps me up with the experience. I also think the translation to 3D looks supreme!
You look at other comic strip movies like The Garfield films and it looks nothing like the comic aesthetic at all! (I'm referring to the Bill Murry films not the THE CHRIS PRATT GARFIELD MOVIE). Or another franchise like The Smurfs live action films ,it gets it's own discussion but my main issue with these films is that it tries way too hard to be hip with the kids or trying to look cool with product placements (which is very insulting to watch in my opinion) and none of it reminds me of the Smurfs!
I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and-
Audience: OKAY WE GET ALREADY!
So yeah great animation, moving on!
Comedy: The movie's comedy is more about the situation and mainly Snoopy's fantasy slap-stick humour, while I got a few chuckles and I could this comedy gold but I'm glad that, just like what I said about the Smurfs it's didn't tried to have cool edgy humour or rude ,crude humour because (why would anyone would that's funny for this film) and baby humour like farts or burp jokes. (Yeah nobody wants that). There is this one scene where this random Spanish music played when Snoopy is trying to help Charlie dance but thankfully that only last like for 10 seconds. (This movie doesn't tried to jab out throats with annoying pop culture humour or random music that makes babies go hey I know that song movies like Smurfs the lost village or Shark Tale).
characters + Plot: It feels like every character that the writers wrote got it right and none of them got butchered or completely a new character, you got to remember that when you are making an adaption you got make a plot line but still keeping the things what people already like in the first place and if you completely re-tell the story with a new coat of paint then what's the point.
Good adaptions like The Mario Movie , The Captain Underpants and this film keep the aesthetic why we love those franchises and putting them in a new story in a meaningful way.
However if there's a Yin, there's always a Yang. You see, there are adaptions where we get it wrong, I know this is me repeating myself again but let me explain. Bad adaptions like The Lorax and Horton Hears A Who are movies that the people don't cared about the legacy of Dr. Suess and as a result it makes movie very jarring and soulless to watch, also movie's like The Cat In The Hat tries to re-invent the wheel and just like what I said being hip with the kids and this is just me demonstrate why good writing really matters, thanks for stalling you but back to the movie.
The plot of this film is very simple, it's about Charlie Brown proving himself that he isn't a failure and wants to be a love by a red-hair girl he meets and a side plot where Snoopy writes about his fantasy of him being a hero to save his own gf. I think the writers done a great job of putting Charlie to challenge himself and giving him an goal and I think the movie's message of seeing in to yourself of your qualities and skills is a message that it applies to everyone (including my self as a person). I want to praise the children who voice the characters and none of them are annoying and finally there is no celebrity voice cast there!
Took you so long Blue Sky to loss that addiction!
Characters like Peppermint Patty is creative my her skill of hockey and also very sleepy during school, Marcie who is a person who is not very energetic but is very knowledgeable or Lucy is very bratty of things but not always selfish just a name a few all of them feels like the characters we know and love.
The ending scene is probably the best part of film for me, not because it's an emotional emoji cry over the top thing what would people tend to say; its that Charlie Brown learning that he doesn't have to be the smartest or strongest guy or even the coolest celebrity ever and the red-hair tells him that the scene feels rewarding because Charlie Brown finally got the care he wants and it makes us feel confident about him. It ends on a high note of being a fan of The Peanuts and the plane crashing.
Final thoughts: Honestly like the Mario Movie I don't need an over the top with an outlandish premise or a dark dramatic movie to tell a good a story, the movie is a celebration to the people who grew up with Peanuts. I think this movie should have won the Oscars instead of Inside Out in my opinion!
If I have one critique with this movie however it would be the side plot of Snoopy and I'm not saying I hate it or a flaw it's that it's the weakest part of the film for me and I'm going to be a little nip picky but I do feel like the movie plays it a bit too safe for my taste but even then I still don't want an over the top dramatic film.
It's definitely one of the better adaption and there is so much care of this film and I can not recommend it enough!
That's everything I got to say!
