Walt Disney Animation Studios' Raya And The Last Dragon is an amazing film that I would really recommend to viewers who enjoy fantasy action films like: Epic (2013), Peter Pan (2018) and Beauty And The Beast (1992). It is a narrative that conveys important virtues and is a fun way to instill them into younger viewers without them realising it. This is a film that can easily be watched again and again without it getting tiring.
Raya And The Last Dragon is about the trust that is broken and lost between the communities of Kumandra. We can tell this when Namari betrays Raya and how this effects the people around them. However, the message of trust is conveyed to the viewers as something that needs to be earnt and not abused. This film is also about friendship and the different bonds between the characters as they grow and become less wary of one another, like the relationship between Raya and Boun.
The setting changes as the characters enter the different areas of Kumandra. This is due to the effect of the Druun and how the area has been separated. The areas differ from one another as they reflect the part of Kumandra. The narrative is set in the different communities to highlight how the trust has been broken and, therefore, segregated them into a unique way of working.
In the film, a calm, soft music is played when Seesoo is in water and this brings an atmosphere of happiness. When the characters are in Talon, a mysterious music can be heard creating a suspicious tone. Silence is also used through out the film to commemorate those who were lost.
The Druun are black and purple in colour to portray its harm and danger, making you feel shivery and nervous. Seesoo is a light blue and lilac hue, representing her kindness and optimism. This portays her character to be someone who looks on the brightside and is not sad for long. Additionally, it suggests that she is able to help others see things the way she does, through her optimistic perceptive.
As the film begins, we see Raya with a piece of cloth over her nose and a suspicious glare in her eyes. Raya's facial expression tells us that she is suspecting of others and people have to work hard to earn her trust. This is also proven as she is riding alone due to the devastating after-math of the Drunn. We further uncover that, she behaves cautiously towards other characters as she is unsure of who she can trust, due to her past experiences and encounters.
The narrative is written through the eyes of who can be seen as the main protagonist, Raya, and this is shown when the camera illustrates what she does over what the other characters do. This film, however, can be seen to have a several protagonists as many of the main characters play a vital roles in the storyline.
