Hable Con Ella (Talk To Her) (2002)

Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Talk to Her’ is a Spanish film which shows two men meeting after the people they love are put into a coma. Marco (Dario Grandinetti) is married to Lydia (Rosario Flores) who is a bull fight, who meet after Marco attempts to do a journalist story on her break up with an ex-boyfriend. Only one day, she is hit down by a charging bull, and put into a coma. Through the film, we learn about their relationship, but also the relationship between Benigno (Javier Camara) and the patient he looks after, Alicia. Benigno looks like a caring man that gives the appearance of a happy kind man, but not all is as it seems. Here we learn the secret side between him and Alicia, and Almodovar leaves us with the thought to decide whether or not we should support Benigno, or see him as the wrongdoer. By the end of the film, Marco and Benigno’s relationship has built into a strong relationship, which makes it worse when you watch the final ending. Marco’s attempts to help Benigno make us feel sorry for them both, but yet again, deep inside we know what Benigno has done. Almodovar leaves the film with the audience still questioning whether we should hate or feel sorry for them, which shows the brilliance of his work.
