Kidulthood (2006)

When I first heard about the film, i assumed the genre of it was crime and that it was a very gang related drama. Also the fact that it is called 'kid'ulthood, that gave me the impression it contained young teens rather than adults!

Kidulthood is about the life of several teenagers that live in West London. There is a lot of drama throughout the entire film, all the characters generally behave violently and unlawfully, portraying the sort of life they live! Trevor, known as 'Trife' and Alisha are the two main characters, at the beginning of the film it is revealed that Alisha is pregnant so one of the main dramas within the film is her pregnancy and her choices to either continue it or not.

Another focus in the film is bullying, one of the characters called Katie was being emotionally and physically abused by a group of youths at her school. Katie's parents aren't aware of what is going on in her life therefore it comes as a great shock when she finally did something about it.

It involves a lot of drugs and alcohol. The ways in which the girls go about getting these items isn't by using money but by offering sex as a payment; making the film quite based around sex as well.

Towards the end, a party is hosted and all characters attend. Most of the action happens within this scene as Sam who is portrayed as the antagonist in the film arrives and beats up Trevor for their recent arguments. This results in a very upsetting end, concluding with a lot of violence and a severe outcome. By having this sort of an ending to the film, it creates a sense of darkness and makes it more emotional for the audience.

I found that Kidulthood was relatively easy to follow as there wasn't too much going on at a time. It was very believable due to the area it was based in is known to be quite a rough area of London so it somewhat suited the area anyway.

The scene I enjoyed the most was the scene when Trevor and his mates go over to Sam's flat to retrieve his sister's gameboy back from him while he is out. The reason for my choice is that it is very humorous and I found it was a very tense scene as they didn't know when Sam would return.

I personally enjoyed the film because it really revealed how rough peoples lives really can get and as the characters are pretty much the same age as myself I feel like we have that in common. It includes quite major issues so I think it raises awareness of these issues.

i would recommend this film to people who enjoy crime and gang based dramas. As it involves foul language, sexual scenes and violence it should only be viewed by those aged 15 or above.

This film is comparable with Adulthood, Anuvahood and Brotherhood.
