Moon was made in 2009, it is a science fiction film directed and co-written by Duncan Jones, with performances from Sam Rockwell (Sam Bell) and Kevin Spacey (GERTY). It was nominated for an outstanding British film at the BAFTAs.
Moon is the best movie I’ve seen in awhile. Despite it having a few flaws both in the story and in visuals. I recommend this movie. But why should you watch this?
Moon is a small budget film that has been pulled off extremely well. With a small cast that only enhances the feeling of loneliness and isolation throughout the movie. With grade A performances from Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. It has an amazing soundtrack and main theme that I enjoyed listening to throughout.
I love that the film manages to keep you immersed and interested in the situation from the very beginning until the very end. About twenty minutes in I asked myself the question of how is this going to keep me enthralled for the full hour and a half. Without giving the details something happens, that makes you wonder why the main character Sam Bell is even there and what GERTY his robotic companion isn’t telling him.
The cinematography and visual effects lack in some areas, mainly when outside the base on the surface of the moon itself. I found it quite obvious that the moon rovers were models. But I didn’t mind these flaws for an instance, the story makes you forget these flaws and brings you right back into the world of Moon. Apart from that I found that the story was a little predictable in places, I felt like a couple of secrets were quite evident, but this doesn’t diminish the experience. Even if you notice the above flaws, this film is incredible even if you are just there for the ride.
Once the film is over you will find yourself feeling fulfilled and wanting more. The way the film ends also enhances this by having little news reports that update you on what happens next.
I look forward to watching this film again in the future.
