With the new release of Independence Day: Resurgence, I decided to look back at the predecessor to this, the original Independence Day from all the way back in 1996. Describing the plot of this movie is pretty simple: aliens want to destroy the world and it's on the week of Independence Day.
That's pretty much it.
But it's so much more fun than just that.
This movie has so much energy and wit and charisma that it's impossible to get bored, even thought it's two-and-a-half hours long. It is filled with humour in pretty much every scene, and the action scenes are absolutely brilliant.
There is absolutely no character development in this movie, but face it: is character development and ambitious, metaphorical storytelling expected in a movie like this?
And that's what I also love about this movie: it's very self-aware. It knows what it is, it knows what it's trying to be, it's trying to be your big, fun, silly, dumb summer alien blockbuster, with a bit of classic July 4th speech thrown in, and that's exactly what you get, and in a good way.
Independence Day gets an A-.
Speaking about upcoming reviews, I know that my output on here has been lacking recently, and I apologise for that, but school has pretty much toned down to plain fun now (I sincerely hope), so there's gonna be loads of reviews coming your way. I'm going to ask our FILMCLUB leader, Mr Davis, if I can keep my account running once I have left primary school (which is only in two weeks, boo hoo...) but some reviews that you can expect are Ghostbusters, BFG and Finding Dory.
Me and my Dad were hoping on seeing the new Independence Day on Sunday. I've heard mixed to negative things about it, but I still wanna go in with an open mind.
Anyway, hopefully I'll see you on Sunday with an on-the-spot reaction to Independence Day 2!!
