This film has intrigued me for a while. I had only ever heard about it when my favourite critic Adam Johnston (aka YourMovieSucksDotOrg) had put this film as one of his top films of 2011, all I had viewed was one scene and it certainly interested me. But I'm not sure I was ever expecting anything as amazing as this. This film is disturbing, to say the least (without spoiling), Antonio Banderas gives an amazing performance, I did not expect what happened throughout the course of the film with him and it shook me to my core. The direction is also partly what makes this film work, with the cinematography being excellently shot. Almodovar creates this amazing atmosphere through good use of editing and suspense and keeps your eyes glued to the screen as you witness all of these insane events take place. This is a story that you absolutely NEED to see without knowing many details, not knowing what happens is what makes the movie so much more effective and disturbing, so of course I will not spoil a thing. I can understand that this film might not be very accessible and admittedly some scenes will disturb a few people, but I thought that it was an amazing blend of amazing direction, terrifying performances and a well written story that is truly haunting. I highly recommend it.
