Synopsis

Roger Ebert was known across the world as one of America’s finest film critics, trusted by audiences for his accessible and fascinating opinions on a wide variety of films, both Hollywood and international. After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and having part of his lower jaw removed, Ebert became unable to speak but carried on with his review writing, supported by his loving wife Chaz, and allowed this documentary to be made about his life. Beginning with his humble origins as a child in Illinois and covering his hugely popular television show, ‘Siskel and Ebert’, this lively documentary features contributions from eminent filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog and Ava Duvernay whilst celebrating Ebert’s life through to the end. For anyone interested in film criticism, cinema history and lifelong passions, Life Itself is a engrossing look at a life well lived.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
