Synopsis

Trans activist Charlie Craggs fronts this documentary in which she interviews transgender teenagers across the country to hear about their experiences, specifically related to medication. With NHS waiting times for young trans people extending to 3 years and above, severely impacting on mental health, those affected are turning to alternative solutions. Some are seeking private treatment at high expense, while others are taking even more extreme action and buying black market drugs online in order to self-medicate. We also hear from doctors who are at the forefront of providing treatment for trans teenagers – one of whom has had her license suspended for doing so – as well as an anonymous contributor who regrets their surgery and has since de-transitioned. ‘Transitioning Teenagers’ highlights the lack of structural infrastructure and required knowledge from medical professionals which is causing severe consequences for those seeking treatment.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
