In her thirty years, Emily Brontë wrote one, hauntingly enduring novel, ‘Wuthering Heights’. Little detail is known about the author’s life, other than what can be gathered from the accounts of her older sister Charlotte, who famously wrote ‘Jane Eyre’. Emily conjures a portrait of sibling rivalry, brooding Yorkshire moors and inner turmoil as the younger Brontë sister strives to develop her creative expression. Cast as the ‘strange one’ within her strait-laced Victorian family, Emily finds freedom alongside her maverick brother Branwell and the poetic clergyman William Weightman, whose initial aggravating presence in Emily’s life tuns into a possible inspiration for the heated relationship between her fictional characters Cathy and Heathcliff. A traditional period drama, this speculative biopic nevertheless explores the topics of mental health and female empowerment with eloquence and contemporary relevance.
In Victorian England, a headstrong woman becomes romantically involved with three different men whilst she tries to run a successful farm.
