Returning to his Texas hometown for Christmas, Adrian hopes to finally disclose his true self and his sexuality to his family. His parents’ conservative and religious views, however, make this a difficult thing to do; his blunt father has narrow ideas of masculinity, while his caring mother urges for him to make amends with his high-school ex-girlfriend. Struggling with isolation, he finds connection with his younger brother, whose interests also make him an outsider in school and at home. But with Adrian hiding an even bigger secret from his family, he fears this might be the last time he will see them. This moving and intimate depiction of a young man’s experience of the AIDS epidemic provides an accessible insight into the attitudes of the early 1980s and the emotional toll the disease took on individual lives.
Members of the Paris branch of activist organisation ACT-UP demand action from the government and pharmaceutical companies amid the AIDS crisis.
