Leicester is a multicultural city which sits in the heart of England, with a history that can be traced back almost 2,000 years. Its market – the largest outdoor market in Europe – has stood in the same spot for the last 700 years, previously providing a space for Roman merchants. The city also had a global reputation for being at the forefront of manufacturing, hosting approximately 100 distinct industries. This documentary merges 21st century interviews with archive films of the market and manufacturing industries from the 1920s to the 1980s, featuring contributions from past and present market holders, the city’s first elected mayor, and others.
