Into Film resources for STUDIOCANAL Films

As the coronavirus/COVID-19 situation continues across the UK, we recognise that many schools will be closed, and many parents will be looking for ways to keep their children meaningfully occupied outside of school time.

Since it's our vision that film is at the heart of every child and young person's educational, cultural and personal development, we've put together a collection of our resources that explore some of STUDIOCANAL's recent films, including family favourite Paddington 2 and acclaimed French drama Girlhood. The resources below provide curriculum-linked ways to explore these titles, as well as fun extension activities to keep young people engaged and entertained.

In particular, our Pop-Up Paddington resource - created in partnership with STUDIOCANAL - encourages pupils to develop communication, active citizenship, problem solving and creative skills. The resource culminates in the creation and evaluation of a pop-up book featuring Paddington carrying out ‘odd jobs' around the community - a perfect activity to do at home!

Paddington 2

Recommended for ages: 7 - 11

A film guide that looks at Paddington 2 (2017), in which the gentle bear gets a series of jobs in the local community to buy his Aunt Lucy a birthday present, only for the gift to be stolen.

This guide is useful for exploring topics including citizenship, English and PSHE in addition to highlighting themes surrounding European countries, crime and punishment, law and order, family, friendships, British cinema, growing up, community, authors and characters, and storytelling.

Kiki's Delivery Service

Recommended for ages: 5 - 11

A film guide that looks at Kiki's Delivery Serivce (1989), a Japanese animation about a 13-year-old witch-in-training, who as part of her calling has to spend a year living away from her mother in a new town.

This guide is useful for exploring topics including art and design, film studies, PSHE education and spirituality in addition to highlighting themes surrounding magic, growing up, travel and exploration, friendships, directors, Asian countries, animals, family, child safety and community.

Girlhood

Recommended for ages: 14+

A film guide that looks at Girlhood (2014), Céline Sciamma's energetic and honest coming-of-age drama about a teenager's new friendship with a group of girls in the suburbs of Paris.

This guide is useful for exploring topics including PSHE education and French in addition to highlighting themes surrounding school, growing up, friendships, family, foreign language films and European countries.

Room

Recommended for ages: 14+

Available to stream on Amazon Prime Video

A film guide that looks at Room (2015), a harrowing but hugely moving story about a young boy and his mother attempting to escape the enclosed surroundings the boy has known his entire life.

This guide is useful for exploring topics including literacy, psychology, PSHE education and citizenship in addition to highlighting themes surrounding family, books, health and wellbeing, life and death, and gender.
