So Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
(WARNING: This following review will contains SPOILERS because I'm that person, if you haven't seen the movie. Lock your doors and you'll be banished to the Spirit Realm)
I've come to make an announcement! Sonic 3 is the best movie I've ever seen, no over exaggeration.
I said while way ago I said The Mario movie is the best video game adaptation, now this takes the crown.
Its ironically to me that its like the classic games because it gets better from the last one (which I played them).
The first game was good but flawed, the second is better but still flawed and The Third is the best there is. I also played Shadow X Generations, its good but I don't think its an Masterpiece what IGN critics says.
IGN:"There's too much water! I dub it bad!"
So without a further-a-do let's gotta go fast, for chillydogs!:
So to best start off, the animation is modern peak. I never saw this animation being this good, the animation on Shadow with the water effects goes hard. Its very polished and it feels like the CGI characters do feel real not the Disney dirt cheap ones they have been pushing. The green-screen also looks good (for the most part but still its not like Disney live-action scrap). Its a lot less noticeable and I'm amazed how well done it looks.
I think what makes this movie great is because it (same with Transformers One) has a nice balance of pleasing the fans and audiences. So no demographic gets isolated.
Unlike the two previous movies, the emtional beat hits like a truck.
Particularly the Maria and Shadow, brother and sister friendship. It let the audience breath in what's really going on. Shadow isn't evil for the sake of it, he's evil because humanity made him evil. Shadow asked himself of who I'm I and he's purpose was Maria and now without her, what meaning in life is going to take him now?
He to agreed to end humanity with he's dad figure Dr Gerald.
But I do prefer slighty the game version because in Sonic Adventure 2 Shadow mistake in Maria's words as he thought she meant to end humanity but as Amy tell him, she actually meant to bring peace not to humainty but for Maria. But still this is a really good setup and execution wise.
I also adore the scene where after Shadow actually mistake for Walter but its Tom (the detail he looked shocked as Sonic beg Tom to not die as it reminded him of he's lost for Maria). So Sonic in anger finally got the Choas Emerald, I'm glad there's no forced "I'm not talking to you" trope as Tails and Knuckles forgive Sonic.
Anyways, as Sonic and Shadow stops fighting. Shadow looks up to the starts and god this scene hits hard. Shadow remembers what Maria said and decided to team Sonic with the Choas Emerald to stop humanity being destroyed while Live and Learn plays behind is bad A. Keane Reeves is shockly good if not perfect as Shadow. John Wick performance fits perfectly, he gives liek sombre tone is very fitting for Shadow.
I love Sonic, Tails and Knuckles chemistry. Again the movie has no stupid tropes and all of them are very likeable and enjoyable. The ending where they say just Team instead of Team Sonic is very heart warming.
I adore Jim Carrey Eggman, I love he's bond with Gerald. In fact the comedy in General is hilarious, there's not one line I find it cringe. The movie knows how to make Eggman absurd and it perfectly strikes the right balance.
Also this line:
Little Girl:" Are you Detective Pikachu?"
Knuckles:" Ha, ha, ha. He does look like a Pokemon! Pika! Pika!"
Sonichu is officially canon!
Also Eggman is comically tragic, he never knows he's grandfather (minor critic thing, for some reason he didn't aged for 50 years which makes no sense like are you telling me he's still that age and I just prefer him saying Uncle in the games but whatever) and at the end. Gerald manipulates Eggman, so in defeat he give him a smack bottom and dies is hilairous. The ending where he says goodbye to Agent Stone (our coffee goat milker) and dies is both sad and funny.
I also loved the ending, its not a "you saved the world" or Tom is alive and not the "he's faked he's death" tropes. Its done in a down to Earth move which I thought was very cleaver and the message of "moving on in life" is done very well.
Also, Metal Sonic?! Amy?! Red stripe?! Jet Rocket Boots?!
Final Thoughts: So overall, this year is such a downgrade from 2023 and I've seen a lot of bad or mid movies this year. So Sonic 3 is such a breath of fresh compare to most of them I've seen. I wouldn't say its a Masterpiece but its a Great movie and the best video game adaptation so far. Its crazy that Sonic went from Laughing stock in the Fandom to a beloved franchise again.
Its crazy to me I've seen all of the Sonic movies in threaters, it always feels like a special event for me and I can be thankful for the creatives that bring me this far.
Sonic is weridly always apart of me, even though I mainly grown as a Mario and Pokemon fa from any Nintendo related stuff. Sonic was also been with me. I never thought I would say that but here I am. Played the classic games now this, In just wondered where it will take me next for years on.
And what a way to end of 2024 and honestly there's no better way to end it off.
So that's Everything I got to say and a Happy New Year!
Going forward for 2025...
