Hey my dear loyal viewers!
This review is going to be a little short then your regular review because its Christmas and I'm going to be a little chill. Also I've seen this movie a million times so anyways.
So Home Alone.
It's a Christmas Classic that is remembered to this day.
Its kind of funny I'm reviewing it now since I did skip it for exchange for the sequel until a year later. I will say I liked this movie however I don't think its that good what people said it to be. I wouldn't say its overrated its that I've got problems with this movie holding back from being one of the greats.
So without a further-a-do lets get into it:
Positives: My biggest one for me is unironically the music, its brilliant. I mean it's by John Williams, he's the master of musicians. He had done the Main Title of Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Jaws. He's soundtrack is no exception, he had done an incredible job of capturing the Christmas magic with a bit of child like wonder.
I also love the poster, Kevin with the screams face inspired by The Scream is iconic.
I'm just keeping this short the comedy is funny, the dialogue is very snappy and witty. People screaming comedy isn't always my cup of tea but I love they used different ways without playing the same joke. My favourite joke in the pizza guy thought the Ralph Foody (side note if your confused Angels with Fifth Souls is not an actually movie its a footage for this movie but it's cool they made it original instead lazily just using an random clip that nobody cares) is actually shooting the pizza guy but he's just a tv is a really funny visual joke.
A lot of people didn't notice my other biggest positive is the camera, its the way it's shot. Like the part where Kevin is going down the stairs on he's sliegh and camera focus on Kevin's perspective, I appreciated that.
I love Marley in this movie, its setup as this hoax told by Buzz but as the progress it turns out he is just am old guy who is worried that he would see he's son again because of he's regrets scared him and Kevin relies why would you call him as a kid would do. I know there's a stigma of old man, church and young kid but that was probably the 90s but its cute and it pay off he finally meets he's son's family and he's grand daughter.
The problems: Okay, my biggest gripe with this movie is the plot, in fact just the writing in general (yes I've change my opinions from my latest re-watched). I know this is a hard to swallow but hear me out on this, I feel like it's very convinent.
I'm just baffled how the movie set it up, so Kevin happened to lose he's boarding pass in the bin, the power outage is gone down, everybody somehow manage to get up all up on time, nobody wakes up Kevin for some reason, they happened to mis-count the wrong kid and they all happened to be at the airport on time. Do you see now?
There are 6 six plot convinces in the set up ,things just happened so Kevin can be Home Alone. It's so played out and I'm having a hard to believe in that. Like I get its suppose to be a comedy but the Wet Bandits are the only really cartoonist part of the movie and the presmise isn't cartoony enough for excusing for the convinces.
There are some parts I just scratch my head, like I don't get the family is being mean to Kevin. I dare to say they are more mean then Kevin himself!
Kevin's parents are the dumbest: Almost everything it's really their fault, not Kevin. I don't get why they treated him that way, the audiecene didn't care because they think its Kevin fault but when you actually put down the mindset it's the parents that causes the plot to happened. They are never on he's side even at the pizza scene they let their cousins says means things like "Kevin, your a disease".
Serriously at the plane when they get there, dad look at the children and there's no way he clearly didn't notice Kevin is missing. The mother literally should another lady's phone and ask she can she give a ride very aggressively. I get she's in a desperation here to see her child again but come on how I'm I root for her to this. She also gets a ride of a bunch of men, (side note John Candy, yes Uncle Buck is here is a funny person and it's ashamed he sadly passed away) why can't dad come with her but whatever.
The rest of the family some how gets here a day all are please to see Kevin, including Buzz. Why? Kevin did nothing for them so why would be pleased with him and it comes across as forced.
The Wet Bandits are a bit misplaced: Now here's the thing, I don't it's a bad concept, the whole idea of the two crooks, Harry being a cop but actually a theif in disguise is a neat a concept and granted did gives us a hint he's going to be the bad guy. Its that, its the way the movie placed them, I know the ironic scene where Kevin beats them up is both funny and very memorable. But the movie now makes them look like idiots.
It doesn't line up because Harry said he wanted that house for years ever since he become a police officer, so why did he wait that long and should he stole for years now? Also the scene where he explains he's plan out loud. Why did you do that! Oh wait so Kevin knows they are coming so the plot could happen, ah yes.
Also again the trap scene, I don't get why they act like buffoons, Harry had morals as he tells Marv to stop using their calling card so why could he not like wear a mask, I mean he has the ideas.
Final Thoughts: So overall, I know it might sounds like I hate this movie but I did enjoyed it and I do consider it good. Its just that its one of these movies has a lot of neat ideas and some works well for me but there are other parts that just falls flat for me. I just don't think so the movie is great or even a masterpiece what people acclaimed it to be.
So that's everything I got to say!
