Home Alone (1990) is a classic Christmas comedy film directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes. In this film, the protagonist Kevin McCallister (Macauley Culkin) is left behind as the family go on holiday to France.
In this classic film, I like that Kevin is suddenly thrown in the spotlight to fend for himself against the helpless Wet Bandits by making crazy and comedic traps like pouring water on icy stairs to make them freeze, the burning blowtorch and the iconic red hot doorknob. Also, I quite like the things that Kevin gets up to to entertain himself whilst his parents aren’t home such as Kevin watching Angels with Filthy Souls and getting scared during it. This film also captures the joy of Christmas in spectacular fashion.
In the film I liked how comedic and heartwarming it was. This film encapsulates the Christmas spirit perfectly through the positive messages that it displays such as family is important and holds sentimental values. Also I liked how brave and stupid Kevin was to persevere without his family to fend off the burglars through the use of hilarious booby traps like the red doorknob, the icy stairs and the burning hat. Kevin uses his intelligence in many ways like going out shopping for groceries and merely surviving on his own for days on end. Furthermore, I liked the special effects like the fire, ice and tar as it captured how effect the traps were. Lastly I enjoyed the music as it was very Christmassy and dramatic which made for an amazing viewing of the film as you were on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what would happen next.
In conclusion, I think that Home Alone (1990) is one of my all time Christmas favourites as it’s funny, hilarious and heart wrenching. If you haven’t watched Home Alone then I highly recommend that you watch it at least once in your life. Also to back up these points I think this film is extremely well made and covers all aspects of Christmas in spectacular fashion. Furthermore I liked the reunion at the end where Kevin hugs his mother and father, I believe that this embodies spirit and togetherness which ties in with the main message of this film which is Family. My overall rating of this film is 5/5 as I love watching this every year whether it’s at school or at home!
