So Penguins of Madgascar.
The early 2010's for Dreamworks is pretty goofy. Because in one hand the've made masterpieces like Kung Fu Panda 2 or How to Train your Dragon 2 but Dreamworks decides to make their own original movies with variant quality and box office movies. But at that time period their movies failed at box office, it fails so hard it almost bankrupt the studio (Like Rise of the Guardians) which ended up lending the creation baby slop movies (like Boss Baby).
But I feel like that time of era was ignored the most to much so its about for me to look back one of them (well I've done the Croods) to see if any of them holds up.
Its a movie I've actually seen in theatreswhen it comes out. It wasn't my typical trip, it was a school trip and it was a movie I went too see when it came out. It was a very unqiue exeperince for me and it wasn't just once but twice since I recently saw Red One aka MCU Christmas movie.
Also I want to mention that this review is supposed to come out in Monday but there was an error going on and its really frustrating so I hope this never happen again. I should mention this review is more of a look back after 10 years.
That's right, this movie is a decade old now, jeez time is crazy. So for celebrating its (late) 10th anniversary, I decided to look re-watch it because I haven't seen much people talking about it on the internet and not many people seem to care. So most importantly, is this movie any good?
So without a further-a-do let's get into:
To summerise the plot (all in a nutshell); the penguins decided to celebrate Private's birthday by going to a vending machine but Dave the octopus capture because he wants world dominates to turn all penguins into brain-rot zombies with the fourth chaos emerald. But the a group of furries called The Alpha Wind-
(TV beep sound effect)
The North Wind and funny warcrimes happened and to make a long story short. Penguins wins and Dave is a loser, you're loser! What you have to say for self!
To start out off the worst, the plotline is kinda generic. The theme of family is pretty serviceable, I do not think its a message by any means. It can work well since the movie going for that you are always a valid member of your family is a good message, I just think the movie spell it out. At the end Skipper just says it and yeah the save the world trope exists in this movie. I feel like the ending is a bit forced but it doesn't ruined the movie for me.
But the movie is at its best is suprisingly the comedy. I laugh the whole movie, its surprisngly on comedy power with the Madagascar movies. I love the movie know its absurd and I love it. If I mention all of the jokes, we will be here all day.
I'll mention a few like the joke where the penguins are in Shanghai but they think they are in Ireland and does a dance. So after they find out Dave is going for the last penguins in Shanghai but they ship themselfs to the boxe and despite its the exact place, they now in Shanghai.
Skipper: "So this is it, Shanghai's famous little Dublin district."
He mention Dublin, literally people from Ireland would get this joke and I'm one of them.
I think why the comedy works so well is the pacing, its faster then I think and it never wants you to feel bored. Again the movie is stupid but it knows its stupid and doesn't come cross as cringe or forced. Its surprisngly very comedic timing, its nowhere as funny as the Madgascar films but this movie has its out of pocket humour like the Madgascar movies. I also really like the movie actually acknowledge this is taking after the third movie and it feel so much more tighed into the serise.

DAVE!: Dave the octopus is the greatest villain in history. I don't why but he is so funny when ever he came in the scene.
John Malkovich performance is amazing, he perfectly capture both of he's dangerous side but also he's charismatic personaility. I love chrismatic villains, they are the best. I love what he's animated, the animation isn't anything special but I adore the way he's animated. I love he's form stretchting at places and him going throught the cages is so well animated.
He's human form aka Dr. Octavius Brine (he's skin suit) is the best character design in history. He is exetremly goofy the point I can't stop laugh because he's design is goofy.
He's character design is Eggman level:
"I'm going to kill you, and then kill you again!"
He is god, I'm kidding he walks on water! Like he become the Marvel Jesus!
The penguins themselves: Honestly they hold up fine, like I said Skipper learning that Priviate is an important family member is a bit of a stretch but it kind of makes sense because Skipper in the Madagascar films mostly used Priviate as substitute then anything.
Also I will say it acknowledge the previous Madagascar movies because if you haven't been paying attention in the first movie they ask the chimps to read the sign. So this implies that they can't read and all of the movies the penguins don't take anything seriously and instead used their own ways to fix problems. Like in Madagascar 2 the penguins can't figure out what's wrong with the plane and take the flow of it because they don't know how to fly planes. Exactly in the scene where Skipper throws the book and just steal the North Wind's plane and not bother reading the manual.
So the Penguins can't get basic facts right.
So at least the movie acknowledge continuity the Madagascar movies (I've said that like 3 times already).
The North Wind team: I actually like The North Wind, I love they are a chracter contrast to the penguins but with technology.
Wep, Doctor Strange is now a furry, man they should have made Classified in the multiverse timeline movie that nobody cares. I love Classified is like Skipper, he also mis-pronuce penguins as penwings as Skipper is constantly forgetting Dave's name.
Final Thoughts: So sum up my thoughts, its a movie that is made for your prue entertainment and honestly I need that for once for a while to sit back and relax and just laugh.
And that's all I need from a movie, I don't a deeper meaning to get something out of the movie. I feel like people are forgetting your watching movies (or any piece of media) for your entertainment. You don't always need to make sad emtional moment to make a movie good, it just be goofy. Penguins of Madagascar is a good example of a movie don't being deep but being very goofy. It doesn't make it a bad movie if it doesn't have a deep meaning or message, I'm looking at you Tomato Critics! You take things way too serious (so do I but I'm not a Tomato Critic and I don't get any insperation from them)!
So overall, its a decent movie, I wouldn't say its that good but it dosen't do much wrong. I only recommend to people who likes the Madagascar movies (like me) and for general audience rather wants more but who cares! I enjoy it and that's all I need from a movie.
So that's everything I got to say!
