Gladiator is a really fascinating and enjoyable action film which is filled with entertainment, and it came out in the year 2000 which was directed by Ridley Scott who also directed other films such as Alien, Blade Runner, The Last Duel and many more.
From the very start of the film, it really sets the tone with quite dramatic music as the character looks at what is around him. The use of this close up shot is very good as it captures the characters facial expressions very well in the moment of the scene. After this part, the music picks up into more happy music and then the use of the establishing shot gives an idea of the surroundings and the setting. I really like this as it sets the tone for the film and the use of these two camera shots is very well placed.
The use of over the shoulder shots in parts of this film during conversation adds a real tension as to what is happening, and this shot is very effective in this instance. It is very effective in this instance as it makes the viewer almost connect with the characters and also with the film in general as it feels like it is YOU who they are talking and communicating with when in conversation. This makes it feel very realistic, and it is also entertaining.
My favourite part has to be the scene not long after the start where the battle commences, and fire is being blasted out of people’s bow and arrows at each other. The editing on this scene makes it feel really fast paced and hectic, which keeps the viewer on edge while also having a clear understanding of what is happening. With this scene being so near to the start, it sets the standard as to what the film will later bring and it grabs the viewer, making them intrigued and wanting to watch more and it definitely worked with me.
I must say, I did quite enjoy this film and would definitely recommend it to a friend as action films are one of my favourite genres and I feel as though this film would appeal to many different audiences.
