If you remembered on my review on Goosebumps, I said it was okay and a nice fun little movie. It wasn't ground breaking but I got something out of this movie which I'm happy about.
Sadly can't say the same with Goosebumps 2 because its a Mess and fails to live up to the predecessor and I'm going to tell you why:
Goosebumps 2 (*SIGN*), E-O-Boy I'm I looking forward to this movie! I actually do remember seeing advertisements of these movie but I just I wasn't bothered to see it and for good reason until my Doomsday has return.
So without a further-a-do let's get over it:
Before I tell you the bad I do want to tell the good that being it has a shorter running time then the first, but that's all I got to say. Yeah, that's just a backhanded compilment.
I have a lot of problems with this movie: Okay, where do I begin with this?
Okay, I'll talk about the human cast in this I have no idea what are the people behind this is going for, I do not unerstand why can't they have the original cast back instead of the new ones because it the story feels unfocus and questionable. The person who is in the cast is Jack Black himself and it feels he wants a pay check.
The cast isn't the worst thing in the world but its a far cry from the og.
So not only they can't get the og cast back, what's even more pointless is the budget on this and the result of the CGI. Spoiler, its bad.
On technical level the CGI fails because of the smaller budget then the first and make the CGI more noticeable. You obviously that Slappy is CGI is pretty distracting. Its annoying because the first dosen't always have CGI and some where in costumes.
The story is bad: I just this out of the way, the characters in this is so forgettable. The two boys feels like Champ but less funnier.
The reason why the first movie characters fine is because all of them are different, Zack and Hannah are the same characters of their parents and the only difference is Hannah is a Goosebump character, Champ is the innocent man child and Jack Stine is the over-pretective father. They all bounce off well, particularly Champ and Stine.
But here there's like no chemistry here, they go like: "Hi, I'm u sis" or "Hey, u made an accident, dosen't matter." Yeah, those kind of characters.
But what draws the line for me is Sarah, my problem with her is how forced the her character arc is. That she can't write and wants to be the greatest writer. When the invasion happen, she saved the world by writting and then goes to collage. WOW! What an amazing, brillaint character to relate (like me)!
Also really ticks me off is the dance scene and her boy friend cheated on her. WHY?! I don't get the point of this, sure works fine as a teenage melo-drama but this is Goosebumps we are talking about! Not a drama! The movie really wants you to care about her but it comes off as cheesey, in not in a good way. It removes the quality of the first movie, sure it still has boring teenage melo-drama but at least its done in the first act and it take itself too seriously which is the spirit of the books.
Here it has an emtional satire that makes it really sappy (not slappy) and I get there has to be an emtional moment to create steaks but this is dial up to 11! The point where it doesn't, why should I care if the character have struggle that is on the nose all the time, you don't to say everything! Sure her bf cheated her but what's the point of it? He dosen't empact her and the plot. On top of that he barely do anything in these movie the point he's kinda just forgotten about.
The comedy also fails by making "comedic" falls flat in your face because every dam time the two boys says is just forced and also the pumpkin says "Happy Easter". Huh, where's the funny? I get its supposed it be comedic effect but it barely shows you it and dosen't have the dynamic energy from the first. The script is really bland and basic if not random at points.
Speaking of steaks the movie is the plotline again but at lot less interesing and does a poor job of setting things up. In the first movie it has a decent set up that Stine is always hiding he's daughter away from Zack and it leaves the audienece wondering : "What is he hiding from?". It was shown there is bare traps and acclaimed that it TV scream and not he's daughter and you can tell he is hiding.
The it was revealed that he was R.L Stine that trys to hide he's past. Here, the steaks is Slappy got out of the book then did he ended up escaped since he was caught by a PokeBall at the end and never be seen but who cares at this point. Slappy got out of the book some who and cause war crimes every where.
He's motivation is generic, I get the movie is going and granted it may works but we never spend time witjh him it feels random land events happen all for a sudden, he's defeat is the guys throw him to the water, why not completely destroy it? Oh to pad out the runing time, smart move guys. Also a fourth-wall break joke that he's an animated character, "Well, in just a CGI character!"
Also he did Said who is calling dummy (a line I was waiting for) but done with no energy and it never establish before he has super human natural powers but whatever! Also the monsters themselves are kinda basic, its not as intersting as the first with diverse monsters like Ivy plants or blob but here's its pumpkins and other boring decorations.
Final thoughts: So that was GooseBumps 2, was it Cinematic Classic Junk? Yes, but its as bad as I think and its worst sequel in the world but it is a down grade from the first in every way.
Again, why would you make if can't have the same budget, cast and storyline. Why would you make it any way if you can't anything back that offers nothing new, no interesting gags and it makes the movie tired slop!
This movie is the kind of worst movies, that being pointless sequels. Its really dishearting from at first a movie with talented, well written and passion and love. The the corrupt product came and ruined the magic what makes it worth it in the first place. So far you forget, the worst thing that can ever happened to a movie in my opinion, trust me nobody wants to be forgotten about. Sony Animations (mostly) makes pointless sequels that doesn't matter at all, though but this is not as bad as the others.
So that's EVERYTHING I got to say!
