So Transformers.
You know what it is, I know what it is and you probably seen any of these movies or the TV shows.
Transformers is a made by a toy company (Hasbro) but it really took off from the iconic G1 1984 show.
Its been recently I started to like Transformers, well because of the films I'm going to talk about. To celebrate the 40th anniversary I'm going to review and give a presepctive to the Michael Bay films. Also on a unrelated note I love TTTE and the TV show is also about 40 years old. Oh god...
However the critics doesn't seem to be a crowd pleaser and this is why Introduced to you to Leonard, the nerd, who constantly critique everything. We will get to you.
Anyways without a further-a-do let's see if the movies are more than meets the eye:
Before Time Began: So in the early 2000s, Hasbro is not in a good spot and the video game market is begining to rise. So Hasbro is like: Okay we need to reboot a movie of our property but what one?
A board game?
Nah too dull, I'm Sorry.
Oh, oh how about G.I.Joe?
Close enough but at the time US invaded Iraq so let's not get too political.
Transformers, I mean kids wants space toys?
Yeah, why not.
So the movie was greenlit and the producer is none other then Steven Spielburg himself. The true director is Michael Bay himself, at first he's like : Really, a kids property?
Then he maybe a clip and a bit of a backstory and he's like : Cool, I love disaster movies! This is the perfect fit for it!
Transformers (2007): So in this summer of July 27th of 2007, the first film was release.
Wait, your telling me that movie is a month younger than me.
So anyways I did watch this film and what do I think of it? Its surprisingly good, no really its actually a good movie.
The animation of EVERY film: To start the things what I like the biggest stand out for me is the animation. I'm saying it all to the films by the way.
It looks so visually amazing and the details on the animation is incredible! I love that the filmmakers take the quality over quantity. Sure you can perhaps make more characters by lowing the quailty, sure but it wouldn't look visually stunting or interesting. I think the animators does an outstanding job of bring the characters to life and the way the Transformers transform is so satisfying to watch. That's thanks to Industrial Light and Magic!
I also adore the character designs (for the most part), it was mostly based on the G1 designs but as Bay focus on a disaster aprroach they made it more detailed both of the Auto-Bots and the Decepticons (which I'll get to later). Honestly I'm glad because the original models don't look great and speaking of disaster.
Transformers works as an disaster movie because I mean we are taking about robots turning into cars and fight each other.
Leonard: "But is Transformers actually suppose to sell to make toys, isn't that soulless by a greedy corporate for stupid children should do!"
Look, well I can see why someone can turn a blind eye to it but here's are my counter arguement, I don't care it its just to made to sell merch. As long it has a passion team, as long the toys are enjoyable who cares if its just a commercial.
Robots turning into transport with their own believes and come from an alien planet is interesting, also I've also defend Cars on my review so I'm not really the type of person that judge by their obnoxious, over-exaggerated merch and toys.
I know many people complaint about the human characters-
Leonard; "Um, yeah you dumb-grass why can't it just be about thr Transformers itself?"
You see I've seen way too many people complaint that arguement but I think its unfair and invaild because this is not an animated movie, this is a live-action movie with a bigger budget and something went wrong it has to to be restarted all over again.
Also the human side plot isn't that bad, Sam is weridly the biggest chad in history, more so if not equal to Ned from Spider-Man.
So see I like that Sam is quite a nerd, he fails at football and he is the everyman protagonist. He is very tolerant to the GF because he said this line:
Sam: "I want to ride you!"
He gets the chick anyways! Also many forgot that he is important to the plot because he happens to be a plot device for the Auto-Bots and the Decepticons. He's basically the audience view, as Sam, Sam is the audience. He's basically a wish well character which he ended getting what he wants, a nerd of all things get a chick, a car and others I'll later talk.
I know that I'm not the biggest fan of the CGI characters in a live action setting but I'll argue this along with Paddington is the only exception because yeah the G1 is a cartoon but its more realistic and less cartoony unlike say likle Alvin and the Chipmunks which their cartoony apperence doesn't match with the humans doing realistic things. So I appericate that he at least tried to take itself serriously at points with the action scenes.
I particulary love the chase scene in the third act, it has no dialouge and done in a subtle way and I love Bonecrusher despite being a side. I don't know I love he's transformation with the unquie sounds, too bad he didn't last long.
Also if your wondering why is Optimus has red flames and IronHide is black is because of cameras. At the time the colour red mess up the cameras, so Optimus is change to give he's iconic flames. I honestly don't mind because I think its really cool and the Bay IronHide is my favourite version of him, I just love he's design being that he's the tough one and I'm sorry I don't like the G1 design of him he doesn't really tell me any thing about he's character.
I also think Bay does an great job of making he's digns but also being faithful to the og. So overall I think this is a great way to introduce to the audiecne and it works well as being a Transformers and Bay went all out for it. Its one of these films where it sticks to you unlike when you watch a film and go like: Its good. But then you forget about it because it didn't impact you but here it impacts me because it has style, an intense actions and other werid stuff that Bay embrace with the PG 13 rating.
Also iconic lines: "Shut up Ma!"
Jazz: "Do you want a piece of me!"
MegaTron: "No! I want two!"
I also know that the behind the scenes that where BumbleBee bash into the glass is practical and when BoneCrusher flip the car upside down is also real. In my opinion Michael Bay has the most beautiful explosions in cinema history, not groundbreaking by any means but the best explosions and that's because how actually good the camera angles giving the intense and dynamic energy.
5/5
Reveange of the Fallen (2009): Of course this movie made over 700 million of an 150 budget, Bay made a sequel during the strikes of 2008.
Look, what I'm saying that I don't want to make Bay as my punching bag, a guy I can laugh at and treat him like a clown. Look every one of he's films has at least has one thing I adore.
Now this is when my opinion is a bit polarizing because everyone hates it to their souls and every time I bring this movie up to a TF fan they will view it has hell. But me, no. I actually kinda like this movie.
You see let me explain. I adore that this movie introduce us with a back that is link to real life that they are the ones who built the pyramid, I love it because it gives a sense of realism. I also love that the movie starts to show sides of both the Auto-Bots and the Decepticons (which I'll get to later just be patient I'm just summing up every movie before I talk about the characters themselves).
I actually love Optimus died because its gives steaks that only him can defeat the Fallen and without him then happy Doomsdays!
Okay, I'll admit the humour the movie makes does get tiring and the jokes the movie makes is pretty messed up to say the least. Like Tom Kenny the guy who voice SpongeBob is a walking stereotype a.k.a MudFlap and Skidds... they are this serise's Jar Jar Blinks.
Also my biggest disapointment is Arcee and her sisters. You see I like the character and her character from the orginal designs as I already mention, I do love her original design and she's pretty bad though-
Leonard:" Boo! Your not Quagmire!"
Okay, okay, whatever! But Bay says now to female characters and we got this design which is not bad but its a far cry from the original design, out of all the characters I Bay did the worse is Arcee because she barely get to do anything, has a one minute of screen time and was killed off. She didn't do anything to progress the plot she's just there and Bay you made things BETTER!
I also love the detail the IronHide lost he's canons and replaced by guns. I like that the movie acknowladge this in a subtle way and that's really because the canons on IronHide is the hardest to animated as they say, so he lose it.
I like that Sam is now in collage and the parents is kinda funny the point where are they even okay? Also he's mum after SoundWave called her on the phone she says he's a stalker got me, to be fair you made me laugh movie (sometimes).
I love Devastator in this movie, unlike the G1 he is basically just green and purples. Not here he is combaine with different colours like red, yellow and green. I adore that he is threaten not just the size but also he can suck things up like a tornado and the transformation is really cool!
Also more Ionic lines:
Optimus: " Give me your face!"
4/5
Dark of the Moon (2011):
Its suprsingly good, I love the style and hey they got digital cameras so now they have red characters! Sentinal Prime and the wreckers all of that. I love Sentinal Prime that being the idea of God Vs. Humanity because this machines we are talking about are larger than life but Sentinal being angered that Humanity don't view him as an God , so he joins the Decepticons.
He actually did empact the plot being he is an Auto-Bots who cause destruction to Humanity in Chicago so the humans had enough with the TF and want to get rid of them for once because they don't know who to trust if its Auto-Bots or Decepticons.
I know a lot of people are angry that IronHide died but for a writing level its good because he has been with Optimus and losing the most strongest Auto-Bot outside of Optimus is problematic.
Also thank god that Bay finally let go of the stupid stereotypes for once!
I love the scene where MegaTron finally stops and look up of CryberTron is closing to home and says: "CyberTron, you are saved, at last."
Also this scene:
Sentinel: "Optimus, all I wanted is the survival of our race. You must see why I had to betray you."
Optimus:"You didn't betray me, you betrayed yourself."
Sentinel:" No Optimus! AHHHHHHH-"
Leonard:" That was very cheesy!"
With the score behind?! Huh, huh! Oh come! You gotta admit this is cool!
So yeah DOTM is kinda awesome.
5/5
Age of Extinction (2014):
Honestly this has to be my least favourite film of them all.
Mark Wahlberg or Cade Yeager (I can't get ovet with he's name!) isn't instereting and doesn't have the chad liek Sam does. He's kinda boring for me and I sadly don't care about the human characters here. Also he's daughter is dating an 20 year despite being 17... yeah Bay has a dirty mind with females.
Also Rachet has a sacrifice by he's confused that he tries to save the but humanity turn against him, he is confused and LeadFoot (the fat Wrecker) is killed. Aww I love that guy he's my favourite out of the Wreckers being that he's fat and he's so goofy and funny. I guess I did feel something! Also DJ Miller is in this and dies so, NOOOOOOO-
Also Grimmlock is in this movie as prisoner with the collest design but he is sadly not in a lot considering that the market of it.
Again I do like the side plot where the humans gets tried off the Aliens that they always aclaimed its their planet but LockDown came in and it shows how persusasive the Decepticons are.
Also this is the point where the animation starts to get a little wonky, not as I mean its bad its still very good its that you can be very noticable with the green screen and this is the point where the humans are obviously going to live with zero injuries what's so ever. It just makes it feels a little fake. Also the movie takes way too long and almost a three hour movie for some reason.
I wished that this movie has Astro-Train because that would be really cool if an old Decepticons is a train and i love trains (maybe I'm Autistic).
John Good is Hound and I'll say he does give good energy.
Its not the worst movie out there and I can see why TF fans likes this and if you do then good for you! But me I'll never watched it again. It is Cinematic Classic Junk.
Man Bay has created the best lines in history: "I'm an inventor!"
2/5
The Last Knight (2017):
Honestly its okay I guess. I do like when Optimus findly realised that Earth isn't the rightful home and compliants that MegaTron started it as he aclaimed it to be. I know I'm repeating this but man I love when MegaTron picks up StarScream and calls him he's friend which I adore.
Mark Wahlburg is way more likable then the fourth because now he's daughter is now in collage he has no sense of purpose other then hanging out with the Auto-Bots and I love Grimmlock. The baby dinosaurs is kinda cute though.
Also the scene where Merlin is a drunkedhead and says this: "Oh, God, I'm soozzled!" Bay you son of the gun how do you come with this brilliant one lines!
I guess I like the ending where Optimus finally leaves Earth and go to he's actual home, CyberTron also forget the ending where Quintessons is actually alive and maybe she is sending Unicorn. The movie is also way too with the run time but the pacing is decent and has okay jokes srinkle in.
So overall its not bad but it could have been better.
3/5
The Auto-Bots Vs. The Decepticons: Here's the thing what I love in stories. I love that the movie's don't protray one side right or one side wrong. Yeah Decepticons do bad things but what really interested me is that I know a lot of people says the Decepticons after the first has really generic designs but I strongly respectfully disagree on that.
I think the Decepticons has respected their original TF because if you remember ROTF the first kind looked very alien(ish) but the Auto-Bots gone more of an human design not only to both mock (with the stupid race stuff) what humanity has become and also to try to be like them.
The Decepticons took an disliking towards humanity that they and the Auto-Bots aclaimed that Earth was their home but the difference is that you know the Decepticons desires power and using it to abuse others.
I also adore that the Decepticons are smart unlike the G1 which they are a bunch of pin-heads. I love that bthey are ploting the Auto-Bots all the time so seewk what is their motive. This is why the Auto-Bots tend to throw a temper because the Decepticons are always ploting them for example in ROTF Optimus receive he's Matrix but the Fallen knows all about it so he steals and used it for CyberTron to come to Earth.
I also liked the Decepticons work well in a team ; for example StarScream, I adore StarScream in this movie because not only he's design (ignore the Dorito joke) giving a spunky to the movie but also I adore that he isn't ploting aganist MegaTron he is he's friend and I love that in TLK where MegaTron picks up StarScream's head you can tell that he's tick off because StarScream has always he's close friend and it ironically makes StarScream's death more tragic.
I also love that the Decepticons are more in milatry vehicles or industry vehicles, I know people missed the colour side but again if Bay choose to make both of them colourful which one is the enemy or not.
I notice that the way both Auto-Bots and Decepticons kills, the Decepticons tends to kill them by the heart which does makes sense since the first Decepticon is killed by the heart but the Auto-Bots in the other hands loves to kill, like a guilty pleasure and tend to kill them by the head.
There's a way to create TF is the All-Spark that was reveal the it doesn't matter if its Auto-Bots or Decepticons they are mindless killing machines.
SoundWave analysis: I want to high ligh our first analysis SoundWave.
Leonard: "But is SoundWave not important to plot because he has no empact to the story and plus he is underused."
Okay this is when your wrong. You see again remember that Bay had no choice to get the script over and done with because of the strikes so you can't really blamed him for this. Also you said that he has no empact on the plot is also wrong. You see I love SoundWave here is a Satellite and it got to do with Sound-Wave with the name instead of a BeatBox.
Remember that MegaTron was defeated and thrown in the water and the Auto-Bots are partners with NEST. SoundWave hear them and calls down the tiger cat thing to receive the Energon because the Decepticons need it for their new youngs and they are dying. Do you see now?
He did empact the plot by sending Decepticons down to order to save MegaTron, get the Energon and killed Optimus. So without him that means the Auto-Bots will kill and win every Decepticon, MegaTron will still be at the water, the youngs will died and the Fallen will not come to Earth because Optimus will easily kill him.
He literally cause the plot to happened! So not only he has excellent spy skills but also a threatening Decepticon. By the DOTM he did get a chance to shine and he is loyal to MegaTron is he's true character, so no Bay did understand him and he's character
ShockWave analysis: MegaTron and Sentinal Prime is not the only villains but also ShockWave too! Again many people complaint that same critism with SoundWave and I'm going why he's actually a well written villain.
You see you had remember that MegaTron is now a little weak and powerless every before so the remain Decepticons is up to them, keep in mind that ShockWave is an scientist and intelligent guy. He knows about the Auto-Bots and NEST being concern about their enemy because they haven't seen them for two whole years as Optimus establish at the start of the movie.
Sentinel Prime is the viallin but the Decepticons need him for transport CyberTron to Earth but Sentinel Prime is at "THE MOON" so the old spark is there left and when NEST finds it he attacks and grab it. He pretends to run away by going up and down but surprised Optimus going striaght to him and causing to confused NEST by pretending he is attacking them. Then he purpposely go out and let Optimus cut the drill.
Do you see what's going? He WANTS them to do it and "fallen" right to their trap being the spark IS the bait. He literally out-smart the Auto-Bots and NEST. In the third act he gets a chance to attack again by seeking to Optimus and causing a diversion.
Leonard: "Um, what about the parachute that he is killed in the most lamest way ever!"
Really? I mean he has a gun for a hand and he has one hand and not to mention he has one eye. So no he's not an idiot! So yeah I think he's not only a threaning villain by how powerful he is by he's possess a huge drill! He also again out-smart them and cause the plot to happened.
I will not change one thing about him he is a perfect villain with an amazing design that says: "I'm going to kill you."
Optimus Prime anlysis: Now we can talk about the main character-
Leonard: "Optimus Lime?"
Ugh, I can't bare with this guy.
Optimus Prime is a true leader, let me explain. You see if you seen the first film you know that he wouldn't hurt humanity even they capture BumbleBee but as the movie sequel goes on he become this more brutality momments just like I said about this line:" Give me your face!"
But he still retain the kind, caring and courageous as we know of he's character core.
I adore he's flame design and also he's redesign him to make him more like an knight and he's pretty hot... anyways! I'm more talking about he's masclulinity and the true colours of Optimus Prime what makes him a special character.
He was always there for every and never let he's guard down. He's a character that went on a painful journey of losing friends, he's brother MegaTron betrayed him, finding the home he truly belongs for hundreds of years and humanity betrayed him after causing a world wide problem.
But he's a character that I look up to him because he's leader and takes reponseabilty for the entire world. He never intend to hurt the world he just wants to get over and done with.
I think Bay does a great job of keeping the core of he character but also bring something new to the table. Also Peter Cullen is perfect for Optimus.
Why are the humans so mean spirited?: Also one last thing, why are the humans so mean spirited? Like every charact Bay has written is that every human character has to be have this one quirk to another! I think that's because the influnce of the TF, I mean thery are at the begining of their time and the Kinghts did help out King Arthur and they are a part of the war and the only good people happens to be the military.
Final Thoughts: So that was BayFormers, it sure was an franchise.
Here's my ranking:
1. Transformers
2. Dark of the Moon
3. Revenge of the Fallen
4. The Last Knight
5. Age of Extinction
Conclusion: The one word I describe the BayVerse Saga is... Convoluted. The plot get a little confusing and the writing is not for every one's cup of tea but none of them are boring. Every one of he's films have one good quality or one thing I enjoy about he's film. This is why I said in the title "The Most Interesting take on a Franchise" because its flawed but st the same time really fascinating. Even my least favourite is not boring or generic!
Its fails on a special note than the typical Hollywood soulless product. Some action movies today will never capture the beauty, the explosions that Bay is know for and the style makes it an stand out.
There is something so beautiful of larger than life machines in disguise as transports and a beautiful display of battles and wars.
Transformers proved that it is more than meets the eye!
So that's everything I got to say!
