So umm, its unfortunate that this is the last theatrical Blue Sky movie release and its 5 years old, I might have an extended crisis. I do remember watching this movie in class and back then I thought it was alright and now after watching the movie and what do I think of it? Its alright, that everything I got to say!
Audience: Hey! Your not done yet!
Well said my straw hat man that I just made up!
You see if you can recall to Ice Age 5 and I didn't like this movie. Its like a fire spreads the entire forest but this movie is like a little seed and unfortunately dies after. Just because its alright doesn't mean every alright movie is bad. Its a serviceable movie, so without a further-a-do lets get over with this dead horse!:
Review:
The plot is pretty simple: As an Spy Thriller movie I might say this is the most basic or the most vanilla out of the Spy films I seen. What I'm saying is that its not poorly written or annoying its the most simple what I've seen. The movie doesn't really go in depth or challenge the viewer its kind of there, to best put it. Its about a Young Scientist name Walter or should I say Tom Holland that wants to be the greats but ended up with Oscar Will Smith and there is this evil dude that I forgot wanted to take over the world or something (I don't know its one of those explain by an idiot).
But whoopy Will Smith got turn into a bird instead of a menacing fish so things happens, they go places , break up scene, final fight and end. The premise is kinda wild but granted I'll say it works on a technical level of writing and I'll say the pacing is pretty okay. Its not the best but I think it give enough screen time to get us invested with the characters.
Speaking of the characters Tom Holland (I'm calling him for now on) and before I say any thing else I find it a bit weird they model after the actors, whatever. I'll say he's character is likable enough, I mean he's a human compare to other Blue Sky movies which most are animals or other things. Also before I say anything else I think this movie is the least inoffensive out of Blue Sky's out put. I think Will Smith and Tom are cast for the shake to get people seeing their favourite actors in an animated movie, I guess? But even then I think these two performances are fine.
Anyways I do like that Will Smith starts as this egoistical "oh I'm the best" guy but as the movie goes on he learns to value others by Tom's influence is neat, though I wish he didn't turn into a bird. I'm sorry I don't buy this people turning into animals because I personally find it a bit of an horrific concept and I never get why its used for comedy. I'm not saying it can't be done its that I think its a bit creepy.
The humour is the weakest part of the movie: Well, I'm saying the humour is a bit hit or miss. I didn't like the gross humour that the movie is making and I think it over done it but even then I don't think its bad per say its not cringe either but I'm glad it didn't went too far on it. I'm glad the movie doesn't used baby humour which I'm glad of. It also doesn't effect the movie too much.
But the biggest highlight for me is the animation, it might be one of the best looking Blue Sky movie. It has a lot of shades which makes sense for a spy movie and the opening is cool and there are slow motions is pretty neat. I like the style and character designs is a breath of fresh air.
Final Thoughts: For my money its an alright movie, I don't have much strong connections to this movie but it done well enough and honestly I don't have much to say on this movie and I'm glad this the last cinema release because Ice Age 5 - AAHHH - is not good. I might want you to check out on this movie if your interested.
What went wrong with Blue Sky?: This is the part where I say the most. So what happened and what went wrong? I think the main reason why it didn't get enough attention is because the 2010's is a decade that is the biggest turning point of Western Animation, the over exaggeration of the CGI Animated movie market that every animated Studio is now CGI. If you can remember what I said about the Ice Age franchise in Ice Age 5 and the word I describe that franchise is inconsistent. This describe for this Studio.
I think general audiences can easily mixed up with Blue Sky's out put of each movie with different variety of quality. If I'm being honest I think the other main reason why this Studio is not well receive is because the audiences don't really care about this Studio and it didn't make any culture impact because most of the movie I just saw likes to shot itself, a lot. The Studio is constantly making the market tactic of famous celebrities on their animated movies makes it more harder to care about it and sometimes their films treat their kid audiences like dumb nuts.
They make baby humour and to keep this Studio alive is milkatoast the Ice Age franchise and sequel it up and I think why many says Ice Age is generic because this is their most well known franchise. I think the other big reason is the lack of identity. Compare to other Studios like Disney is the oldest Studio and their old movies giving an grandpa vibe but also constantly being beaten up by Critical Drinker because of wokeness apparently, Pixar is the more innovative and I still adore the classics to this day, DreamWorks has this slight mean Spirited side, Sony redeem them selves, Nickelodeon has their movie franchises and the green slime for some reason and Illumination... is mostly bad.
Blue Sky in the other hand is... just there and I know many people might say their films are pretty average at best. I find it a real shame that Blue Sky never got a chance to shine in culture and can't keep up with the competitors because not many cared or seen it. So I'm glad I got to spend all of my time watching each movie and to my final thoughts... again its not their best library but again it has so much potential to be one of the greats but it shut down and nobody cares they well move on the nest thing that is exciting … no one. This is the worst fate any movie and Studio can have, being forgotten about.
So who knows what Chris Wedge is up to now, maybe looking around the city or something remembering the good old days.
Oh wait, their is one more left?! Its on Netflix?! The one that was almost got cancelled by Disney?! And people say its the best one, wouldn't you know. So maybe I ironically save the best for last, the one and only Nimona.
So that's everything I got to say!
