Disclaimer: If you have NOT seen it, DON'T READ IT because this contains SPOILERS, also don't whine over that. (Cuz, it's my opinion and I want to discuss it, so watch it and come back here!)
If you want to know what is my opinion on Inside Out is, its fine. Okay! Put your pitch forks down! Look, it's a movie that is not bad what many people say but its not THAT good what many people acclaimed to be. I don't think its the return to form to Pixar what many people say it is. I'm a bit more dumb-founded that this movie got way too much prises, To me the critics keep on comparing to Toy Story or Incredibles but to me its not comparable because these two movies are a different with the style, my point is that its not that emotionally compelling what people say it is, its that I don't feel connected to this film and that's a problem.
The reason why Classic Pixar's movies stand out is because they are not trying to tell this super sad stories and all of them are homages of different cultures wise and not just of sentimentally. Now, now! There is nothing wrong with the idea of sentimentally in films and if Pixar wants to make that, then go ahead but this is the part where I get the most annoyed and frustrated because Inside Out or should I say Up (Up is a great movie by the way) shows that people are so insensitive with their emotions and its so easy (a little too easy) to do a big emotional sad scene in movies. That is way it didn't appeal (well in my case) because its trying to manipulate emotion to get together to me saying a non subtle lesson of : It's okay not to feel that way or its okay to make certain sacrifices. Again I'm repeating it I'm fine with sentimentally in movies. I'm not sure if this is too outrageous, overgeneralising or being the cynical cool movie critic with an unpopular opinion again?! I don't know!
But do you not get a feeling that Pixar told the same stories with different characters in their original films?
So last year I got to watch Elemental (maybe I can discuss this movie sometime, I don't know I don't feel like it) and if you want to know may opinion on it, this is Pixar's new low. This movie, this movie falls in the lair reveal trope and the fake-out death trope, which is astonishing to me because Pixar never ever falls in a trope, ever! This movie, well it's not the worst Pixar movie but man this is one of the most cookie-cutter stories I've ever seen and it's shocking. The reason why I want to bring it up because I want to address a bit of background here so you can understand my context, here. Oh, right we are taking about Inside Out 2. So without a further-a-do let's get over with it;
Positives: So the things I liked (it's a bit all over the place but here we go): I like Embarrassment (other then he's CaseOh design wise) I like that he's friendly and talk at the end showing that he embrace himself. I like the concept of the movie, if I had one critique about Inside Out it would be that Riley to me lacks personality but here now giving her own believes is interesting. I like that the movie makes Riley grow up and giving her puberty and I quite like that a lot. I like that game character and that play school one is kinda funny. I like the new emotion character designs.
The problems I had with this movie: Okay, this is when things start to get spicy here so embrace yourself. My biggest problem with this movie is the plot line, it's the same as the first one! You can excuse it of saying that's the point the movie is trying to make but I'll argue that good if not great movie sequels changes the story a bit. So dose this movie expand its world? Yes but did the movie challenge to viewer? No.
It has a similar problem to Incredibles 2 with the plot is again from last time. Pixar knows how to make original stories, this is not it man. Its a problem I had with most of their original films (Luca and Coco aren't bad any means), the issue I had is the big sad thing is the entire plot line from the entire movie is not saying a lot. The last movie have sadness and Joy learning emotions aren't good or bad but here it's the same message again. Here's another thing, the Classic Pixar movies doesn't got to do with their adventure side. It works because you get to spend a lot of time with the character, its less about the adventure aspect like most Disney movies and more about their adaptions, its more human and profound then any other animated movie out their. Ever since Disney brought Pixar, Pixar is now constructed with the adventure aspect.
Not to mention this movie is directed by Kelsey Mann, yes the same guy who made The Good Dinosaur (AKA one of the most least liked Pixar movie) . I'm not saying he should go to hell but I think Pete Doctor dose a much better job of directing then Kelsey. The voice actor of Fear Bill Hader did not sign up to it is just shocking to me and replace by Tony Hale. I do think he's performance is a bit much for me and I missed Bill's performance, I find the humour a bit weak in this movie, its not annoying but its maybe a little in your face at times I don't know I don't find it funny. Also, the side plot of Riley dumping her friends over the new cool ones (wow, CRY EMOJI).
Final Thoughts: So overall, is Inside Out 2 Necessary? Yes and No. I will say its Not Cinematic Classic Junk and its not bad as Kung Fu Panda 4 or Despicable Me 4 but also I wish these movie could have tried better instead of saying the exact same thing from the first one. I'm just a bit mixed on this movie. I also worried for Pixar, yeah it made like a billion in the box office but this movie shows (and prove my point) that sequels sells. Original movies don't make as much as sequels. Pixar is now making sequel, sequel, sequel and more sequel. Is dishearten, to me I feel never so unconnected to a Pixar movie once in my life and this is the most grim reality that a company make. Is so dishearten to see once a studio make and achieve big things in their dreams is now wash away to irrelevancy.
So that's everything I got to say!
