So today is summer, so umm what next? Oh right the Blue Sky movies, I haven't been reviewing Blue Sky movies for a while, well because it's not the main show here and I got better things to do and about the review on Robots about another good movie, its THIS movie. So Rio, it's a movie that isn't really a big part of childhood but I played the Angry Birds games of it. For this review, I'm pretending it's a all time masterpiece or anything but I don't get the criticism behind this movie. Like come on guys! It's not THAT bad, its not bad at all in fact. I said on the title "most cohesive", I know it sounds like an stretch in a way but here me out on this animated kids movie about taking birds.
This review might not sound like I'm enthusiastic towards this movie but for real I did enjoy this movie and I'm tell you why, so without a further-a-do let's fly!:
The biggest positive for me: The one thing I liked about the movie the most is that its original. FINALLY! Thank god its not a Toy Story or Shrek Rip off for once! It's a movie about Brazil, there is something new! I'm not from Brazil but I can tell the representation of Brazil is done pretty good! It looks visually cool and amazing and that's thanks to the animation looking colourful and bright like the country! The camera shots of Brazil that makes you go "wow" and it's incredible.
Without feeling too forced and even too stereotypical and it's treated with respect on the country. Seriously, your going to have a hard time to find someone in Brazil who hates these movie because it's good representation. Compare to Ralph Break The Internet which is constantly putting close ups and pretending the dangers of the internet doesn't even exists. Here, there are dangers like the smugglers and the wild life.
I love the plot line, its a romance movie in Brazil, its hard these days to find a romance movies that doesn't tend to lead towards Paris. I think these movie shows that you can make romance in other places other then the boring Paris, London or New York because we seen this a billion times already. I also think Blu and Jewel getting tied up together and over the their development is neat, two getting tied in with one trying to escape and have freedom and the other want to go back humanity civilization.
I'll talk about the characters, Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg with the goofiest voice I've ever heard along side with Adam Sandler) is finally not a Shrek character rip off, the reason I said that because there are some animated movies like Open Season, Home On The Range and Shark Tale all tries to be like Shrek but all of them failed and I've already discuss about my Shrek review. If I had one critique with the first Ice Age movie it will be that Manny and Sid are a bit too similar to Shrek and Donkey. Here, Blu is a nerdy, clumsy Macaw who like being a part with humans and that is because he didn't get a chance to fly. I love that he is an Macaw, THIS is how you respect your country. Teaching other people what they didn't know. Even they got a Brazilian actor to voice line is good stuff. Also, these movie is originally going to be a penguin wash up in Brazil but they change it to a Macaw due to people getting sick of penguins in animated movies, its funny to me but also a good call because that idea sounds a bit conventional and I'm glad they go with a bird that got to with the movie then a fish out of water movie.
The course of the movie, I just find he's voice so funny and it fits so well to he's character. I love when he gets free but he's still stuck on the ground while the others can fly, it shows how much of an out cast he is and by the end of the movie he finally learns to embrace himself. It's not the head its the heart what matters.
I also love Jewel (could have called her Sky but whatever I guess) because I like that her character is fiercely and also caring. It's very unlikely you get a character trait with both. I love the bond of Blu and Jewel. Also, is she, kinda hot? Dose this makes me a furry-
I like the human side plot ( Linda and Tulio) is a similar contrast to our main character.
The comedy is funny: The movie has jokes but its not comedy gold or anything but all the jokes land for me. Its one of those movies that shows you that you don't need pop culture references to make a comedy work. It's not in your face or annoying. Like that Blu choke on a pedal and Jewel try to get it out and it makes looks like they are having s!3. Hilarious. I also love Nigel because not only he's actually imitating but also charismatic and he's a lot fun and good laughs to watch .I also like the smugglers performances.
The musically parts makes sense: If you know me, I hate the dance ending trope in animated movies and it's done to death but here it actually makes sense because music is a big part of Brazil's culture. The dance ending gets a pass in my book because it's rightfully earned and I think the people behind it done it well enough with the execution wise. The songs are pretty catchy and very creative! The movie have a lot energy to it and the composer John Powell (also compose the How To Train Your Dragons movies) done an amazing job! Like, he didn't need to go this hard with the music but thankfully he did.
Final thoughts: So overall, I think Rio is a fun, genuinely good movie that should have got a lot more credit then it gets! I think it should have been in the Oscars! If your a guy that isn't like me who hates the Ice Age movies or most of there films, I highly check this one out. For my money it's one of their best movies they have to offer!
So that's everything I got to say!
