FINALLY! I get to talk about a Pixar movie. I've been dying to talk about one of these movies. So Pixar, what a company! Their classic filmography from 1995 (Toy Story) to 2010 (Toy Story 3) are considered one of the greatest 3D animated movies to be made, making smash hits after smash hits! They evolutional with their animation technique giving their movies a smooth high quality experience compare to other movies at the time looked more scratchy and stiff. Looking at Shrek and Monsters INC, it's night and day.
I grew up watching these movies and I'm one of those kids who like to watch it repeat, dial up to 11!
I pretty muchly still love these movies today.
Cars needs no introduction. You seen these movies and you know what is Cars. It's a animated movie in 2006 made by the beloved Pixar and spawn two sequels.
Cars is a movie that I saw and hear not many people in the internet giving prises. In fact they dub Cars as being too "gimmicky" and too "childish" to be good. I actually never thought the first movie was THAT bad as people, well I'm here to show you why I love Cars and why I think it's overhated, I'm not being one of those YouTuber's who says: "Oh look, these is my hot take" what many people acclaimed, it's that I just want to talk about these movie for a while now. There's nothing wrong if you hate Cars but these is my opinion just to keep in mind. Without a further-a-do let's hit the road;
But first I want to address the criticisms first:
1: "The concept is bad": I know that the movie is about Cars in a human world, I get it. The concept about talking Cars sounds like it's made to sell toys only a children can love. I hate to say these but most big franchises sell toys and merch! Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Godzilla, Harry Potter, Transformers, FNAF, Jurassic Park make action figures and Lego sets. You know that's true! Disney makes merch from Marvel and Star Wars selling baby Yoda toys or figures of Thanos.
Remember that (mostly) any movie, any genre can have an interesting concept regardless if its outlandish or simple but as long it's a good one. People just think way too hard about the world building of Cars, like "why do they have door handles, why the clouds are footprints of Cars, where do babies comes from, why do they have long tones, do they have breakfast, how do they pick up the forks? How dose cars have s-". LISTEN! Any movie that might sound gimmicky can be creative.
Here's the thing, that is NOT the sole focus of Cars and that's because of Cars 2 ruined the reputation of this franchise. (I would maybe review Cars 2 soon) Having a world with Cars, made for Cars is interesting and why it's interesting is the purpose of the movie's theme (I'd get to it).
2: "It's boring": What, why? I get the point almost a two hours and longer then your regular Pixar film but I think the movie's pacing is very well made! The movie never wants you to feel like a waste of time and the majority of the movie spends its time on McQueen in Radiator Springs and the movie shows you the world of it. That is the movie's point! Do you want to spend the whole movie McQueen doing nothing but racing and keep on coming back to Radiator Springs would actually be boring, then it feels like two movies in one and McQueen going to Radiator Springs and racing again would be so boring.
I also ask you, are you paying attention to the movie, come on! It has such a simple plot, I don't get why do people assume the movie is boring.
The animation is amazing: The thing I love about classic Pixar is that each film have an innovate to solve a puzzle and push the limits of what 3D animation can do. Each film have a different style and a different movie and it makes it so fresh to watch. The movie is 18 years old and yet it looks great! I love the reflections on the cars and the lighting is so well done and my god, the dust is so well detailed and honestly that's the magic of classic Pixar. I also love the cars movements, they aren't too cartoonish and more animated like a bit like an actual car would move. Like the car uses the tyres are like hands.
Who knows how many cars they animated. There are moments in the film that make you go "wow" in a view point of Radiator Springs, I got to say to you. Dose it look soulless to you? Showing that world and crafts of the people behind it. John Lasseter is a very skilled and creative guy.
Also just to list other things I like: The comedy is funny, great character designs, great score, great songs (Life is a Highway and Find Yourself is my favourites) , likable characters, great casting (particularly Larry the Cable Guy , Michael Keaton, Paul Newman and Owen Wilson) simple and effective plot.
Lightening McQueen character analysis: I want to talk about McQueen about he's character, I love that the beginning of the movie he's very muchly a show off and an absolutely selfish. He not only ignored getting just gas instead of tyres and told off he's own teammates. I like it because the movie doesn't make him selfish all the time, he get's consequences of actions because all actions have consequences. I like that he's a rookie that wants what everyone wants in real life, being a famous celebrity with hot chicks, lots of money and have a big star in Hollywood movie.
I love in the scene where he have a talk to he's accent "Harv", he told him about he's friends but McQueen doesn't have any friends. It shows how would an celebrity would act, yeah they would got there dream but where next? I love the movie shows how lonely he is.
But after he's dream is taking when he ended up fish out of water gets to Radiator Springs, the only thing he cares about is he's dream and no one else. I like that McQueen completely make the road worse after he knows Chick Hicks got there first, he doesn't realised that he made a mistake and chose to ignore it. I love that the movie takes spend to over come McQueen's flaws. I love that he hates rusty cars but the lawyer Mater is a rusty car. I love the bond of Mater and McQueen slowly becoming friends and this line
McQueen: "(Chuckling) Yeah, maybe I'll use it in my big race."
Mater: "What's so important about this race of yours, anyways?"
McQueen: "It's not just a race. We're about the Piston Cup! I've been dreaming about it my whole life! I'll be the first rookie in history ever to win it. And when I do, we're talkin' big new sponsor, with private helicopters. No medicated bumper ointment. No more rusty old cars."
Mater: "What's wrong with rusty old cars?"
McQueen: "Well, I don't mean you., Mater. I mean other old cars. You know? - Not like you. I like you. "
Mater: "It's okay, buddy. Hey, you think maybe one day I can get a ride in one of them helicopters? I mean, I've always wanted to ride in one of them fancy helicopters."
McQueen: "Yeah, yeah, yeah sure, sure."
Mater: "You mean it?"
McQueen: "Oh yeah, anything you say."
Mater: "I knew it. I knowned I made a good choice!"
McQueen: "In what?"
Mater: "My best friend."
I love it, in fact I love that the movie have its slower moments, to let you to soak in the world.
I love the ending, not only McQueen realises there's more then just racing but also other then finally learning to drifting like Doc Hudson told him, he give the first place up after The king fallen and McQueen not letting history repeats itself made The King win, it's so satisfying to watch that McQueen then that the Piston Cup is just an empty cup and perfectly setups and getting a payoff. It almost got me a bit teary there. I love that he remembers that Mater wants a helicopter, so he give him one and Luigi is a big Ferrari fan so he said a bunch of Ferrari's to go there. It warms my heart.
Tow Mater character analysis: I know people find him annoying and being this dumb best friend but to me I just find him charming and funny but in Cars 2 its a different case, he shouts and screams is actually annoying. I like he tried to reflect the light like Lightening McQueen but failed and at the end he finally used it right. I also love that he can drive backwards which not only used it for McQueen to show it off to Chick Hicks its a skill that Mater have. He's not like Donkey from Shrek where he is stupid, Mater is a chilled guy to be around.
Doc Hudson character analysis: I love Doc Hudson, I love the reveal of he's past:
Doc: "They quit on me, when I tried put together I went back expecting a big welcome, you know what they said:" Your history". Moved right on to the next book he's standing in line. There was a lot left in me, I never get a chance to show." Paul Newman in real life is an actual race car driver , this is one of those rare cases where the voice actor IS the character. He has an nice character arc that McQueen learn the better and it was wrong for him to send far away after the others cared.
The movie's theme: I think not a lot of people realised these the core of Cars is that Sally explains the Small Town America and in fact the things that the movie is based on real things like Route 66. I love the movie shows Radiator Springs being forgotten about, that is a theme that most preserved national historical things of America once have. Being forgotten about is the worst fate it can happened to anyone. It relates to me because even though I'm in Ireland (also I like trains) just to educate you that Ireland railway serves ever since the 50s is getting smaller and smaller. There still ruins of station offices and bridges pretty muchly forgotten about.
I also love that the cars of Radiator Springs is a passionate group and at first they might seem like weird cars but when you touch grass you realised that its that they cared, they don't forced McQueen like slavery they just know that wrecking the roads is wrong (not in my town) and keeping the legacy of Stanley alive. What I'm getting is that it's similar to fandoms where they might seem weird at first but there are some that cares.
Final thoughts: So that was Cars, it might not be the best Pixar movie but it just needed to be executed well and thankfully the movie tried and the people having faith to the product. Its both a love letter to Small Town America and race cars.
Few nip picks: Why dose Chick Hicks is still in the race even though he is constantly pushing other cars around, he should be giving a warning. Where is the camera to Mack? There is no camera in the scene, its weird. Why doesn't Sally come in the final race?
Other then that it's a genuinely good Pixar underrated Pixar movie! I dare to say it's a great movie! I highly recommend it! It's the same thing with Pixar's Classics, I love them all (except for A Bug's Life but that is a good movie to me, it's not bad, it's the weakest Classic Pixar movie) dear to my heart. It's a satisfying and fun experience.
