So umm, The Croods. It's a movie that existed and sure was a movie. So if you don't know as a kid I used to be a historical book worm and I love Horrible History, also grew up watching it. At the time I thought it was an alright movie but now (being smarter then a baby) I umm- without a further-a-do let's get over with it:
Review:
How did this movie came to be: I want to say about the production which isn't anything to say but there is one thing that actually ticks me off from this movie which that when Aardman (if you remembered they make Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and flushed away with DreamWorks) after leaving DreamWorks are working on a cave man movie called "Early Man" however DreamWorks decided "hey if they are making a cave man movie, they left all of the ideas and story assets let's do our version!" this leads to the creation of The Croods and that was the red flag for me. To me this made money, critical acclaim and even an animation nominee! While Early Man bombed at the box office and Aardman haven't made an movie due to production issues of moving to America until Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
It's almost some one stole the show from you! Yes my friend, they took the ideas from Aardman just because they didn't make enough money. You can argue this is an another Bugs Life, Antz situation but DreamWorks has been doing that too many times and any movie after Turbo is consider a rip-off (yes, Turbo is a Cars rip-off!).
I will say the intro is very good and I like the 2D animation but even then this make me I wish this movie is 2D animated!
Iconic lines: However I will say this movie has iconic lines made me laugh: "He's loose!", "Rug, rhymes with Grug." or this scene where he screams at the punch monkey is just so funny. "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHASHHAHAHAH-"
My biggest problem with this movie: It's the characters, the family members is very one-note and full of nothing. I feel like the plot requires the character, what I'm getting here is that I feel like we didn't get to know about them. My brother calls the son "Chris Griffin" and yeah, that's he's character, Chris Griffin. Again, don't like when Guy is shown as superior then Grug and basically stealing the point line from Toy Story. I don't like when one character shown up is place in the right and other old one place in the wrong trope.
I also don't like the fish out of water ,big world, big adventures the whole plot line aspect that wants you to make you go "wow", it's worthless. There is nothing in this movie shows you is dangerous or let you soak in the world. It just makes the world feel weightless and safe. Compare to Ice Age which is also a cave man movie but it worked because you are following the characters and even the movies there's more to chew on.
Though the King Kong movies are similar to that but it worked because either the movie establish Skull Island or the movie you the vibe and dangers of Skull Island.
Final thoughts: So that all said, is this movie Cinematic Classic Junk? Well. yeah it is. This review sound like I hate but really I just don't give a flying funk about his movie because it's even more boring then Disney's Dinosaur in my opinion because at least Dinosaur has an unique style of animation. I also do think it DIDN'T deserved the Oscars because this movie came out the same year as Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University!
I honestly have not much to say about this, it's not offensively bad but there's nothing good either about this. It's one of those safe entertainment DreamWorks animated movies.
Even though I haven't seen Early man in a long time I remembered enjoying it more more then this movie. Honestly got to say that the Aardman movie might be more interesting then the latest DreamWorks ones!
That's everything I got to say!
