Warning: This will contain SPOILERS for Despicable Me 4, if you HAVEN'T seen it DON'T read this review.
So Me, bro and his friend and my sister take me to the movie there to see this movie; during the movie's watch I brought the Minion toy put it to the camera and say "Minion! Tonight we are going to steal the moon!". If you didn't know I love going to the movie theatres because you don't know who good the movie is going to be and it's simply cinema on our lively culture.
This review is different from my regular Despicable Me movie reviews where I tend to talk the entire plot with comedic effects because this movie give me a brainrot and my funny side is now dead :{
Because I'll try to be enthusiastic, YEAHAAHHAAAAAAH MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!
So um the number 4, its the number you can't escape. The reason why the number 3 is the magic number and by the third movie it feels like an conclusion like wrapping you in a warm blank... but then the alarm go on and that was the number 4 ruined the magician's magic. You get movies like Indiana Jones 4, Ice Age 4, Jurassic Park 4.... I meant theatrical releases ,Jurassic World.
Despicable Me 4 is unfortunately one of those movies, if you know what is my opinion on the rest of the Despicable Me movies (Minions not included) I liked the first one, the second is also good but THE THIRD not so good. Without a further-a-do lets get over with it:
Review:
Plot summaries: The movie opens when Gru was in the villain rewards but meet Maxime but after ruin he's reward he was in jail and now being a terros- I mean villain so he has baby and Base Bottom say he should go hideout. Meanwhile the side plot being about the Minions become the Mega Minions and people hate them because superhero fatigue. The family get into trouble like Lucy is now a hairdresser, Margo do stupid school, Edith and Agnes do karate. Gru meet poppy wearing a T-shirt saying "I hate boomers" and wants the honey badger from the collage villain thing Gru just went but oh no the grandma recognised Gru so she called Maxime. Maxime gets the baby and turn him to cockroach but Gru convince he's son he is the daddy so Maxime defeated dance party with the other villains who are VICTOR!!!! EL MACHO!!!!! BRATT!!!!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!!! The end or something.
The good (because why not): Umm, the animation is fine but it's Illumination standard. I guess I liked that Spider-Man train joke Ironically the theatres told me they are going to release the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb movies in August. Umm, I think it's better then the third because it's more memorable to me. UMM-
The bad (a lot in fact): Okay where do I start the pin?
I'll start with the fact that Illumination made the decision to never aged is one of the dumbest move any director make! One of the greatest or compelling stories to be told aged the characters as the movies goes on because you cared about the characters, their journeys and their relatability. It's more believable if they grow up rather sticking the status quo.
Toy Story one of the best examples because not only your see Woody and he's friends changing but he's owner Andy too. The first follow Woody as an egotistical jerk then when Buzz come he and Buzz learns the value of each other that nobody have to be the favourite thing, the second follows Woody as his morality of choosing should he be a toy to be played with or keep as an collectable, the third follows that Woody learning to let go of the past because he didn't Andy any more and Andy doesn't need him, I haven't seen the fourth one for a while and I don't who I'm going to feel about this movie.
Hell even Ice Age of all things and I re-watched the all of the movies for some reason; the first follows Manny and the movie takes time on he's trauma the reason he's feels so isolated, second follows finding love of another one, the third focus him and Ellie getting a child , even the fourth, even the fourth at least follows he's relationship with he's daughter, the fifth.... we don't talk about that movie!
See now? The Ice Age movie's theme seem to follow a story of healing family and I realised it now!
Get my point? It's more interesting ageing the characters, the fourth SHOULD have done that! I'm so frustrates that the movie did not aged the little gorls and Lucy and Gru. Is it weird to you the characters never ageing in our modern society is that weird to you now? It just feels like they are in wacky nonsensical cartoon world that is just jarring.
The plot is mess!: So remembered what I said about Despicable Me 3, so Chris Meledandri be like: "Okay, if the audience don't like Despicable Me 3 with its story, then something is missing! Ah ha! I have a plan! Screw it! Let do it again!"
I've already said the plot already but my biggest issue with this movie is that it tried to do too much and unable to balance it, it's also that the writers just give it up at this point.
Things happened in the movie: Gru gets baby, Lucy a hairdresser, Margo school, Edith and Agnes do karate , Mega Minions and Maxime do evil things.
Yep, it's a bit overwhelming. We barely get the gorls to do anything to the plot and we see very little of it and feels like obligations. Lucy is a hair dresser, okay? That's it, that's all we get from Lucy.
I never get why do the internet hates the Ice Age baby, it's not annoying and the things the baby did by accident, like when Manny him on his back and end up on the slide or he holds on Manny's trunk but let go and grab his nostril. Here the baby is constantly assaulting Gru on purpose and the only time that he like Gru is at the ending of the movie, he's basically an obstacle in this movie. I don't know if this is me but I kind of hate the dad getting dis-improve or constantly getting hurt all the time until he don't trope in comedies.
I also don't know if this is me but do the voice cast started to feel a bit sucked out, like it feels like Steve Carell wants a pay-check at this point.
Dr Maxime Doofenshmirtz sucks as a villain: So to recap, Maxime is long time villain who was embarrassed by Gru and as he's revenge sub-plot he wants to steal Gru's baby son. I will say the concept of Maxime being this Blue Beetle villain being a cockroach is a neat idea. On paper it sounds like a good antagonists but when you see the movie the execution is very hollow.
Okay he has a revival with Gru after he's show was stolen and that's it. The writers wants you to cared about but it didn't work, why? I honestly wish he used to be he's friend and it makes the ending more satisfying.
A compelling villain to me are the ones who have an relationship or friendship with the main character, not only gives layers to the character from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional but also makes the friendship a bit tragic. That's who you connect to the audiences!
Characters like Darth Vader from Star Wars or my favourite DC villain or Batman villain Two Face.
Compare to the other Despicable Me villains they are way more memorable because the other are more of a threat like Victor for example is not only charismatic and oozing with personality but also gives competition to Gru by stealing the Pyramid of Gaze and have advance technology, he literally steal the little gorls!
El Macho is also a good villain because despite the twist villain being a bit predictable however he's motivation being an old super villain wants "Rule The World" by steals Gru's minions and using them as literal killers.
Bratt (the only good thing about Despicable Me 3) is also an old time villain because ever since he's TV was cancelled by Hollywood he wants he's revenge to destroy Hollywood by a diamond with a big mech.
Even Scarlet Overkill despite having a stupid motive, why are standing around just get the queen's crown already! At least she's memorable.
The Vicious 6 is when things starts to crumb they are just there nothing except for Jean-Clawed!
It's so funny to Me that every Despicable Me villain gets worse.
So Maxime has minions like Gru and has a backstory but I feel like the writers give up half way through. Also a dance number, are you kidding Me Illumination! Also why are the villains so happy for Gru? Did he just lock them in jail, they all should be mad at him!
Final thoughts: Yep, that was Despicable Me 4, I didn't enjoy the experience. It's another one of those Illumination cash-cow again, The Mario Movie happens to be a once in a blue moon. It might be enjoyable first watching but when you thinking about it its quite hollow and empty, in fact it feels like an afterthought product!
In fact I also don't like Kung Fu Panda 4 too! Wow! If I had a nickel every time I was doomed by the number 4 I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice right?
(unrelated rant)
The movie shows me how the animation industry is screwed-
Stu:" What do you mean the animation industry is in danger there's nothing wrong!"
Well my friend, you have been leaving under a rock the entire time, I'm just a bit frustrated that last year was the biggest box office bombs in history! Now we are getting so many dam sequels all for a sudden! There's no sugar-coating here, Disney will not stop making some many sequels and the thing is, sequel sells!
ARE YOU SO HAPPY THEY ARE MAKING A TOY STORY 45, MOANA 6 AND FROZEN 33!
I haven't seen Inside Out 2 yet but I know that movie made a billion which is good but that's thing because it makes Pixar thinks that sequels is money and later having a statement that they do not want any original projects any more and laying off some many talent workers is shameless! This is NOT the Pixar I remembered, to me it's dis-hearting, its dis-hearting Pixar of all companies once innovate and told (in my opinion) one of the greatest 3D animated movies ever made, now almost corrupting and falling away.
In fact it's dis-hearting to the entire movie industry, seeing big studios once achieve big things is now fainting way to irreverence.
So that's everything I got to say!
