If you seen my previous review on the movie I adore it and cherish though out time. You can also tell I love the franchise. But if there's a Yin there's a Yang too. In my opinion (most) modern SpongeBob episodes absolutely sucks! The show now is trying to be hip with the kids with the over the top face expression, we love Ren and Stimpy because of the violent actions and it doesn't fit well with the show. I only liked (and many fans) the first 3 seasons and any season after season 4 is unbelievably s""t which is simply because of the success of the show and the writing team change. Gone of the days where the classic have heart and charm and that's thanks to Steven Hillenberg.
Until we got another SpongeBob movie and it sure was a movie and if you want to know on my opinion on Sponge On The Run, I HATE EVERY SECOND OF THIS GODAWFUL STREAMING PILE OF S***! ITS MY MOST HATED FILM OF ALL TIME AND ITS ON POWER WITH RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET-
Oh, wait we are talking about the Out Of Water one. Okay fine but I'll talk about this and I know FilmClub is ignoring Netflix's films, you can't fool me! Or is it a way for restricting me all because I made harsh reviews? Who cares!
I mean come on, the movie title alone, we already seen this concept before and done way better! yeah I had a lot of pro-blemos with this movie but without a further-a-do let's get over with this;
Positives: Alright before I go into the spice let's talk the things I like, first off its a movie that is not a sequel, think about it! It is completely it's own thing and didn't follow up the first. Thank goodness because SpongeBob is everywhere with it's continuity and many fans consider the actual canon is the classics and the first movie and everything else is the same continuity. So I'm glad that Paul Tibbitt is a friend to Steven and I respect that ,even if the writing is mid as hell.
I also like the animation and its sub-power with the first movie, its well animated and considering so many other Nickelodeon films after and before heavily focus on CGI.
The weird marketing/advertising: The they advertised is shocking to say the least, they advertised the CGI superhero part of the film and you THINK the whole movie is mostly about SpongeBob in out of the ocean and fight but no that wasn't until the third act and it lasted for 20mins! So I don't know is it false advertising?!
The comedy is a hit or miss: The comedy isn't great either. At best the humour is funny and on-power with the first; Particular the first act where the humour is fast pace and the absurdity of the WW set and Plankton taking down with new tricks up his sleeves! Some are call backs like Patrick saying "Finland!";
But at worse the humour is directly targeted at children, the seagulls are the worst offenders of the movie, I can not stand these annoying loud seagulls! The point I want them to shut the **** up! In fact the seagulls don't work in the sense of the story (like I said earlier) it doesn't fit well and it feels like a movie for children to laugh.
Some of the jokes that I simply don't get like this:
Squidward: "So is he an anemone or a plankton."
*Drum bang*
Mrs Puff: "Well, someone had to do it."
Or this:
Background character: "He is mixing the garbage and re-cycle!"
SpongeBob being insane.
The two examples are jokes that I didn't get, like at all and it comes across as random. Speaking of random I feel like the film absurdity sakes it a bit too much, there are scene where the "absurdity" is just filler! Like the cotton candy world or SpongeBob untying Patrick, I get its suppose to be a comedy but here these scenes don't do anything to the plot.
The pacing is (mostly) horrendous: Well at the first act it was pace well but then the movie dose an nose dive and it feels like every event happened in the film is rushed on to the next event! In execution wise it feels like less of a movie and more of a long running TV special episode I watch 8 years ago! We also never get a good reason and doesn't feed us enough to get invested to the story!
The aesthetic is all over the place causing the plot to lose itself: So what do I mean in context? Let me explain; You see there are so many things going like the WW, Matrix , time travel , pirate villain, space dolphin and superhero all in the same setting and I think the movie balance it well. The movie wants to eats its cake and it makes each setting for the characters unearned and pointless. I'm also taking the plot since Plankton again wants to steal the Secret Formula which we already saw, not once, not twice but three times! Wow you writers are amazing!
In fact a lot of it leaves me more questions then answers, mainly the start where the villain finds an a book and a skeleton is alive, like how? What is that skeleton? Where is there a book there? And how did the book conveniently lines up perfectly with story of SpongeBob, who knew SpongeBob exists? Why dose the baby call him SpongeBob later on? If they time travel then why is it not happened at the start? Would it be a good foreshadowing to the film? Why is the montage of SpongeBob and Plankton time travel scene gives me a stroke?
The characters aren't well written: Oh boy where do I start? I'll start with our villain since he is the first character to appear in the film, Burger Beard is such a nothing character if I had to be honest but I adore Antonio Banderas performance considering he play as Puss in Boots and now he is at Paddington at Peru. Anyways I never get Burger Beards' character, well yeah we wants money but that's about it and the movie never tells you who he is, he reminds of Captain Gut in Ice Age: The fourteenth with a cool performance but an empty character and Ironically I had the least to say about him.
I also don't like how they used Mr Krabs , Patrick and Sandy, like I get Mr Krabs thinks SpongeBob betrayed him but is that a bit out of character, well yeah Mr Krabs is greedy but I will argue he has heart and that is shown in the first movie how much he cared about him because he was about to get killed and it puts SpongeBob and Patrick a challenge. It would makes a bit sense if they take place when SpongeBob is new at the Krusty Krab and not just always there.
I'll give them that Sandy has a bit more screen time since the first movie barley has Sandy in it but the way she is used is jarring, after she finds a big note says "The End" she believes that it was the sandwich gods and must be sacrifice; I'm sorry this doesn't sound like Sandy would do, it just sounds wrong and sounds like she has been corrupted and the movie is making up stuff as it goes along!
For Patrick same as the other two he is weirdly in the gang to capture Plankton and being the guard. It leaves you wondering why is SpongeBob and Patrick friends in the first place, the first one perfectly show you it by these two in playing pretend and they have each others backs, it shows that Patrick isn't completely stupid but the season 5 -7 handled Patrick far then the movie and he is such a jerk!
The main focus of the movie is SpongeBob and Plankton. At first it doesn't sound like a bad concept, the hero and villain team up is interesting and can have an unique story but the execution is bizarre, I get the point the film is making Plankton to work in a team and yeah it's not a bad concept until the ending completely brush it and makes Plankton want to steal the Formula again, so that means all of the time we spend to Plankton is wasted! I wish that one has a flaw to another instead of making SpongeBob the teacher, this is also why I don't like the modern episodes, I absolutely hate that they make Squidward babysit SpongeBob instead of making SpongeBob a foil and I wish that was carry on in this film. So therefore nobody learns a lesson in the film and it makes the fighting scene rushed and there is no build-up or payoff to it!
The cherry on top is the seagull rap battle is so dam annoying and finally the movie ends!
Final thoughts: So that was SpongeBob Out Of Water, is it Cinematic Classic Junk? Well, kind of; It surprising lacks tropes for animated movie and I don't hate it's just kind of mediocre at best (the reason I give it a two star) but like the reason I said earlier I can't recommend it but there are worse Nickelodeon films out there and far better Nickelodeon out there as well in my opinion. In fact why watch this if the first SpongeBob movie is the superior product! So far I like the fight scenes and I actually don't mind it much, well you know that I'm into superheroes at this moment. In fact just watch the first act and the third act if your interested.
So that's everything I had to say!
