Warning:
This is not meant for kids, so don't take my word for this
This is also my rant about people going too far and mis-understanding my points without respect
Skip this statement if you just want my Shrek review because it's unrelated
When it comes to opinions I'm aware that I'm making bad reviews and not to hate them just for the sake of it, it's to show you why it's bad in my humble opinion. If you disagreed any of my opinions in my review that's completely fine and shout out your opinion but don't be an idiot if I was you. Of course someone is not going to love Wreck-it-Ralph much as I do or don't hate Shark Tale and calling it an underrated masterpiece.
Remember DO NOT HARASS ANYONE who don't have the same opinion then you , just because some has a different opinion dose not mean you should put them beneath them it doesn't make you a stronger person it makes a disrespectful, discriminate person! And by the end of the day nobody cares mine and your opinions! (unless a movie do not have any culture impact like Elemental). This is my demonstration of counter-opinion if anyone is rude to not to make myself look superior it's to chill out of this nonsense:
Idiooot 1 agreement: "The Emoji movie may not be perfect, but why the hell are you Cr*ppin on it di*kward!"
See what mean disrespecting my opinions, these kind of people brings their emotions to their feels ,it feeling like hatred.
IDIOT24: "I had never seen Ralph Breaks the internet but feels like you didn't give it a chance , it has good 2010s humour but no adult man dose not like it let's talk c*ap about it, it looks like you are finding things to be mad at you psycho path"!
Okay this one of the dumbest agreements I've ever heard! You haven't seen the movie for goodness sake! Who can you assume me if you haven't seen the movie! People want to claim that I hadn't give it a chance guys I don't had to like the movie! The cherry on top is the adult man part, that's is straight up s*xist! Guys I I'm adult man so I must do a face reveal.
Dummmy-473: "Bro, your so gay it's just a kids movie and I was entertained was I young"!
For the record.... CAN PEOPLE STOP ARGURING ANIMATION IS FOR KIDS! IT'S DISREPECTFUL TO THE PEOPLE WORKING BEHIND IT AND IT'S THE MOST TIRRING AND BULLS**T ARGEEMENT! Just because it's animated it do not mean it's strictly for kids it appeals to everyone guys in fact I'm a Thomas The Tank Engine fan believe it or not, it's made for kids but I love it any ways!
YOUF: "OMG WUT KIND OF SICK COOL MOVIE CRITIC ARE U! I WISH U ARE GOIN TO HELL AND I WILL THROW YOU TO THE ROAD AND THE CAR HITS U SO HARD I WISH YOU ARE DE-
BORING! So you are sending me a death threat just because I don't like Ralph Breaks the internet likes it's not that serious and the "COOL MOVIE CRITIC" part, you know what I'm renamed myself the CoOL MOviE CritiC. Okay people hates me just because I'm the COOL MOVIE CRITIC hating kids movies, want to see something what I liked? Okay, fine! You got your wish. I'll talk about why Shrek is a great movie and if someone disagrees on me THAT'S OKAY JUST DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUS!
Production: In the world of animation I will argue that movie is one of the 4 most influential animated movies ever, (the others are Toy Story, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) but what makes this movie refreshing and memorable today's audiences? As you didn't know the production is actually pretty messy. It starts way back in 1991 when Steve Spielberg of all people was interested adapting the original 1990 book, this movie will have Bill Murray as Shrek and Steve Martin as Donkey. That would be incredibly different he's great voicing Garfield (my boy) but I'm glad he wasn't cast as Shrek to be honest.
Girl: "Do you have any regrets?"
Bill Murray: "Garfield maybe?"
As the original story goes that the Co-director of Shrek Andrew Adamson wanted this movie for adults , have s*xualized jokes and including the Gun's N Roses soundtrack. This movie would have be so different, it feels liked those Shrek rip-offs being edgy just that sake of it and not because there isn't a cleaver satire. I'm so glad that they didn't went to this direction because it would have been a cinematic disaster in my opinion. Fortunately the Co-Founder of DreamWorks Jeffrey Kenberg argued that the film would appeals to both kids and adults and that's what we got the final product. It has a balance of humour that everyone can find it funny even the adult jokes sneaked in.
What is also interesting about this movie is that after the box office failure of The Prince Of Egypt during other DreamWorks projects the animators from working on The Prince of Egypt, they called it being "Shreked" and send to work on Shrek. This is real information by the way I'm not joking. For the record I think Shrek is a superior product then the others around that time. Chicken Run is okay but not amazing to my eyes and I hadn't seen the others (Ants , The Prince Of Egypt and The road to El Dorado). So no it's not a punishment really!
As everyone knows the original actor as Shrek was the legendary Chris Farley he was a famous comedian in the 90s he record the lines but sadly passed away in 1997 and the voice has been leaked online. So our last voice actor of Shrek is you guess it Mike Myers was recast (well with his Canadian impression at first) using his iconic Scottish accent. I love Mike Myers performance he crushed the role and brings Shrek back to life! But it is ashamed that Farley didn't got like that could changed his life forever!
The aftermath: In 18th of May 2001 after a eventful production Shrek was finally released! It was a Smash (Mouth) Hit earning half a billion dollars on a 60million budget ($491.8 million) and was beloved by critics and audiences, in fact it was so liked it was the first animated film to win an Oscar over Pixar's Monster's INC. That is insane!
My review: Even though I wasn't alive but I do get a sense how refreshing Shrek was to the audiences at the time because the audience is used to the squeaky clean Disney renaissance films in the 90s it was the end of Disney's renaissance era and nothing can't stand out of their way they are kings of animation but until Shrek just came out and say flip it is just incredible. As you didn't know Jeffrey Kenberg actually works with Disney which he cause more problems then success to be honest and left after some disagreements. To be honest the company DreamWorks is made for revenge to mock Disney for life and even continue for some reason in their later movies.
So for Shrek to come along to be this Anti-Disney both wining amazingly financially and critically and also getting preserved in The National Registry for preserved in 2020 and so far the only non-Disney and Pixar because of the Culture Impact it made, it is a monumental achievement in animation! It's so crazy think about it but here we are Shrek is pretty muchly loved by everyone but why?
The movie is mocking Disney right at the start and the set you up thinking this is a Disney fairy tale story but no Shrek laughs at it and wipes the book page with his a*s! He wipes the idea of Disney with his a*s!
To add insult to injury instead of a musical it's a pop song not just any pop song but All -Star by Smash Mouth this fits the tone and rebellious nature of the movie and re-jects it of a musical number.
Any character sings a musical is shut down immediately or the scene Fiona sings to the bird but kills it instead it's brilliant and subversive!
The world is very mean-spirited which is on power with South Parks mean-spirited nature. The other Shrek rip-offs completely missed the point why it works so well. It's because Ogres always had a negative impact and because of that the town judges him by his looks he shouts it out outcasts like him for being different. I love outcast type of stories because I relate to these stories and I love movies like Wreck-it-Ralph or Kung Fu Panda. This good emotion is missing movies like Shark Tale or Home On The Range (yes I consider the second one a Shrek-rip off).
There are aspects that the movie take from Disney like Beauty and the Beast is a great example that already did the misunderstand monster character arc, you don't had to re-invented to make a good as long you put a fresh spin audiences will be satisfied. There is something great giving people what they want and changing little aspects like we still got the fairy tale world. They make Lord Farquaad look like the CEO of Disney at the time Michael Eisner and the actual meaning of the name is even funnier. Jeffrey is not over this whole Disney thing because he made the kingdom look like Disneyland and putting merchandise and mascot as himself, so he is basically capitalizing himself!
The thing is that all the other films came after try's to replicate the lighting in the bottle of Shrek impact and every other movie desperately wants to be like Shrek without considering what makes it great, I'm telling you guys I'm not hating this kids movies just for the sake of it I'm showing you if one done right it can stand the test of time and fantastic.
Shrek's analysis: So this might be a controversial but Shrek has the weakest character arc compare to Fiona and Donkey like don't get me wrong he has a good character arc learning to fit in the world and I'm not saying he has the worst character arc the entire Shrek franchise his character arc both in Shrek 2 and Forever After is great (well I guess the Third is the weakest one) what I meant is in this movie exclusively and like I said earlier it's the Beast's character arc.
Donkey's analysis: Now Donkey on paper having him being this idiotic side character that is made for laughs and barley have a goal might sound boring butt that's the point he is a dumb**s and you see he is not completely stupid he understand and listings to Shrek's stories and that is because he never experience it unlike Shrek. At the third act it feels like he is the boss now saying Shrek is sorry for him and preparing the wedding until Shrek cuts it out. Personally I found Donkey more interesting the later sequels (Shrek Forever after in particular).
Fiona analysis: I also love Fiona because I love that she wants the story to be in the right way for romantic true loves kiss but Shrek is having none of that. I also love her spunky side which the sequels kind of forgot (except for Shrek Forever After) being that she can fight without a man instead of a knight. I also love the scene after Shrek burp Fiona burps louder, it might come across as baby humour but it might something to the ogre because ogres are degusting beasts so it makes sense. I also love the scene where at the background we see her as her ogre form but not the whole picture. But when Donkey meets Fiona as her ogre form she hides it away from society from rejection and fearing not fitting in the world as being a ogre. Until Shrek came in she give her kindness to him and spend more time with him too. By the end of the film she dose not care what society thinks of her and the curse was broken to her once so called "ugly" self which like I said the similar character arc to Beauty and The Beast but keep the beast form instead of beauty.
Lord Farqaad analysis: And to end this review off we finally have the villain. To be honest he not as intimating as Fairy Godmother or Rumpelstiltskin despite being an spiting image on Michael Eisner but still he says things that is so out of pocket and yet it's so funny. In fact Lord Farqaad in my opinion is the most iconic Shrek antagonist. The reason I want to end it off is because I had the least to say about him really.
final thoughts: So overall that was Shrek, it has great characters, memorable score, funny humour, great performance, decent animation (okay the animation dose show it's age a little bit) and great heart. I had more fun with this movie then I was a kid, as a kid I love Shrek and love even more, I say the "iconic" lines and I enjoyed it. If I had some criticism my only gripe is the misunderstand sub-plot but thankfully it didn't last long. There I said it! The cool movie critic dose have a heart it's that some of movies after aren't great but oh well it's more entertaining to poke fun out of it.... screw it! I'm ticking you guys off again! Moana is overrated it's not actually that good what people say in the internet! And Elemental is Cinematic Classic Junk! Take it away! It's junk! Cinematic Classic Junk!
So that's everything... eventually.....
