I had never seen this movie ever for the longest time, in fact this is the ONLY Blue Sky Movie (outside of Nimona) that I have never seen, until now. When I finished all of the Ice Age quintology I have not idea what Blue Sky movie to watch next, so I created the wheel which picked random Blue Sky movies and it's Ferdinand (if you aren't surprised already). It dose makes sense for my motive to watch this like I said I have never seen it and it was the last Blue Sky movie feature length animated movie to be nominated for Oscars (losing to Coco). Like is this movie actually this good or this movie is also justified like Ralph Breaks the internet or Boss Baby for no good reason. Without a further-a-do let's into it:
The story is about a bull named Ferdinand who is a softy bull who never fights but he escape after he realised that his father died in the bull fight. He ended up finding a new home in peace but he got into trouble and eventually head back where he was. He meet his old guys but warm up to each other. A bull fighter come along so Ferdinand was chosen but he forgive him and he and his friends gets to live in peace. Honestly the story isn't bad it has it's subtle and grounded moments even if it's predictable. It's a standard story but it's not a boring to me.
Animation: I well say the animation isn't bad , I will say that there is energy with the animation and you can tell the animators are having fun with it even I didn't like the comedy (which I'll talk later) and I love the landscape of how it looks. Not much else to say about it.
My biggest issue with the movie: In my opinion the part that bother me the most is the choice of the voice cast in fact that was the issue since Epic , they keep casting famous celebrities. Why do they cast John Cena as Ferdinand it's so out of place and a Scottish guy?! What since this is taking place in Spain! It also doesn't fit well at all! But It's not as outrageous or underwhelming like Ice Age Collision Course or Rio 2.
Ferdinand is a good written character: Despite voiced by John Cena I find myself routing and getting invested for his journey. I didn't found him annoying or unlikable. I do like the idea of having a friendly beast character. In my opinion the bull fight scene is my favourite scene in the movie because this is the part where Ferdinand forgive the bull fighter instead of killing him and I do think Ferdinand and the girl friendship is the best part of the movie. Not to mention the movie show blood unlike Ice Age which didn't but to be fair I think it's kind of hard to animated blood or scratch marks for a 20 year old movie.
The one thing Ferdinand done something right: Now this might be getting me some hot water now because you know Ice Age, good story right? But the issue I had with this movie is that I wish they take time like maybe the walk take weeks. That's the trap a lot of movies tend to do the plot just happen for seconds and makes it what is happening the movie. But here I... appreciated that they take time like when Ferdinand went to a new home and it's a surprised that we get to see the characters from the beginning sure it's not much but the time we spend on Ferdinand and see the others grow up like you did kind of forget it.
The villain is okay: I'm not saying he is a great villain or on power with the Disney villains any means but I like him just fine. I mean he isn't interesting but I do like how they subtilty explain the scene where he standing nest to all of the paints of generations of his fathers who where bull fighters in the past. I like that he forgives the bull and walks away. I'm thankful that unlike Captain Gutt which I also like the villain just as fine but the issue is that I think they went too far trying to make him sound like a bad guy and it ended up making him annoying at times.
The funny is sort of a mixed bag: Now It's kind of a controversial opinion but it's kind of a mixed bag to me because I did chuckle at some moments but for the most part it's not funny as a comedy it's because... well it has some childish humour they tried too hard entertain the kids which doesn't well balance with the mature tone of the movie. Let me guess, they haired a guy to do a Scottish accent because saying in weird voices is apparently funny ("original Humour" I'm I right). The goat scream jokes aren't funny in fact I don't like the goat character because her joke is that... she screams, please just stop screaming. Screaming doesn't equal funny! She's also the annoying comic relief side character... *SIGH* Honestly there is a little too many characters here like the hedgehog- WAIT A MINUTE SANIC IS IN THIS MOVIE?! HOW ON EARTH I'M I SUPPOSE TO KNOW! (but any way) you can just remove them to the story and the stupid German horses- OH NO THEY DID THE DAB- I mean sure Ice Age and the Melt Down dose have some childish humour at least they shoved it and the rest of the humour is funny (well to me at least) and for Robots it also have childish humour but at least that movie isn't taking things serious. But here I think they went a little too far with it but at least it's not painfully cringe as Rio 2.
Theme: This is baffling to me because it has a grounded mature message which is looking after for others and violence isn't the answer which is not bad or basic for a Blue Sky movie which most of their movie dose have a basic messages but the mature tone of the movie doesn't lined up with the stupid slap stick childish humour this movie overshadows it.
Final thoughts: So that was Ferdinand, to give them credit they did tried with the movie, I just wished they can go harder then that. Is it Cinematic Classic Junk then? Not really but it could have been better but I do forgive it's nomination unlike Boss Baby which feels justified. It has mostly bad jokes but it's not important to the story, has a fine written story and has developing characters. I ended up enjoying the movie. Would I recommend it? Well only if your interest it. It's good at first but thinking about dose fell apart for me at times and that's all I got to say!
