Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a phenomenal movie with memorable scenes back to back, the entire way through. It didn't fall back on the net of the internet culture stable and legacy legacy of Shrek like how most movies that take place in that setting would, and is completely able to stand on it's own while still welcoming those that grew up watching the Shrek movies and bringing back a classic character so well.
The characters were all absolutely amazing and it was nice to see so many of them were so amazingly fleshed-out. Although the main antagonist was brilliant, I think my favourite was absolutely Jack Horner. It was surprisingly refreshing to see a villain that didn’t have a reason to excuse their actions. It was a brilliant display on how kindness and cruelty are exactly what they are - a choice. Perrito is a character with an absolutely horrible backstory, but still he continues to be an amazingly kind and considerate character.
Alongside that, the soundtrack was brilliant. The song ‘Fearless Hero’ is used multiple times throughout the film (and rightly so, it’s an amazing song). The first time we hear it is at the very start of the film. Puss himself is singing a song about just how much of a legend he is.
The following minutes are packed with colourful top tier animation, amazing actions. and so much pure fun. And the upbeat, cheerful music really highlights his heroism. We are shown that yes, he is a fearless hero who's been our favorite ever since we first saw him in Shrek 2, And that's definitely the Puss in Boots we know, still the same after all these years.
We hear it again at the end of the film (that I’m not going to spoil), but it is amazing how much more…heroic it sounds. He is fighting his fears and done running away, and that’s what makes him sound more legendary than he was in the start (when he was actively singing about how heroic it is).
It was incredibly obvious that everyone working on it had a great time working on the movie and their passion and effort is immediately noticeable by the viewer. There was so much love packed into this movie, and you can tell how much the team working on it truly cares for the things they put out.
I absolutely reccomend this movie, it was brilliant. Definitely watch it if you have some free time!
