The corpse bride is a breath-taking 2005 animated fantasy directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson. The film is set in a Victorian England village that seems like something is slightly wrong.
which follows a Victor, Johnny Depp, and his arranged marriage to Victoria, Emily Watson, for the promise of increasing Victor’s family’s social class and Victoria’s Family’s wealth. As Victor belongs to a family of fish merchants and Victoria’s aristocrats, although you can see very clearly that Victoria is very neglected and is judged by her parents by her very different, beautiful appearance.
As soon as they meet, they instantly share an appreciation and love for each-other and happily wait for marriage. As Victor goes in the forest her stumbles across a undead bride. Emily, Helena Bonham Carter, is revealed and she spirts him to the Land of the dead. I particularly love Helena Bonham Carter’s voice acting as she gives so much character and emotion to Emily, as well as conveys a subtle yet beautiful life to her.
In the Victorian setting of the corpse bride, everything is very daunting and monotone, as if there is something draining the life in the village. However, in the Land Of the Dead; there is so much explosive colour and excitement. This idea in the corpse bride that the living and dead juxtapose each other as if they were the opposite is absolutely amazing. This is also followed by the dim, repeated music in the living world. And the crazy, upbeat, joyful music and atmosphere that is in the Land Of the Dead.
Though with a lot of characters they are barely developed. Especially with Victoria, the movie doesn't develop her character enough for the watchers to care about. Although, I can’t help but think that they could of played more into her background and her parents abandonment.
I can also appreciate the message of the movie that we all have unfinished Business and thought of people you lose are still living.
In conclusion, I adore this dark animation and I think any age could enjoy this film if they don’t mind a slightly morbid environment. As Tim Burtons 1st directed movie( he produced two others before), the style that he uses really interests me because it is so different from any other animation. The corpse bride is an astonishing film.
