This film is the most captivating love story ever told. Based on the book by John Green, this film is the very definition of love at first sight when Gus Waters and Hazel Grace meet and eventually fall in love, both being victims of cancer they share their journeys and their lives. They both develop an interest in a book that consolidated their experiences (the author being in Amsterdam) so they travel up to meet him.
Throughout the film our understanding is that Hazel is ‘a grenade’ as she so calls herself which leaves her cautious of others emotions towards her as she’s worried she’s going to leave a whole in their hearts. This beautiful statement makes us appreciate their blooming love under the circumstances even more. There are a number of quotes from this film the just would inspire anyone. At one point they say, “ we may not look like much..” and they go on to say what they’ve lost but in the most empowering way.
One of the greatest things about this film is obviously the connection between Gus (Ansel Elgort) and Hazel (Shailene Woodley) there connection even as actors is what makes us fall in love with them. Seeing that you can fall in love even if you don’t have any hope at all makes viewers happy that they’ve been given this hope by the characters. This film is an emotional roller coaster but i would definitely recommend this coming of age teen romantic comedy.
