This drama, based on real life, was very enjoyable, as well as moving and colourful.
It is set in Uganda where a girl called Phiona wants to be a chess master. She used to have to sell corn to get money for food. She couldn't go to school or read. Chess helped her to solve problems, step by step, and deal with challenges. Along the way, there are many times where it seems hopeless and she is close to giving up.
But this is not a film that will leave you feeling pessimistic!
Her story is one of determination and courage and anyone who watches it will walk away feeling uplifted.
I especially enjoyed the soundtrack as it moves me in some parts and makes me want to dance along in others. My favourite song is "#1 Spice" by Young Cardamom & HAB who are from Uganda themselves.
I would have liked to see a bit more of the outcome of her story at the end, but all in all I was enchanted by it and would recommend it to anyone over the age of 9.
I rate it 5 stars, but I would take off half for a small part of the story that was upsetting for me to see.
