“Mermaids” is a gloomy drama about the pains of adolescence and the trials and tribulations of a dysfunctional family. It’s a good movie, but it’s also an extremely bizarre and sombre watch that wouldn’t be classed as a light-hearted comedy.

The performances across the board are all solid, Cher plays herself very well, Bob Hoskins is suitably genial and Winona Ryder is excellent as the protagonist and narrator of the narrative.

The cinematography is arguably the greatest strength of the movie, it effectively captures the required mood of each scene, whilst also including occasional moments of dramatic and hypnotic visuals that felt very reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.”

The reason I didn’t give “Mermaids” more stars is mainly an issue of personal preference, although I can appreciate it for what it is, this just isn’t my cup of tea.
