when i re watched this movie i didn't really remember much as the last time i had watched it was over 5 years ago, i feel like this was good as it allowed me to watch the movie with a new perspective and at an older age, so when i went in i was quite pessimistic as all i could remember was how annoying Mr poppy was which sadly didn't change after this viewing.
i feel like the simple plot in this movie was a very smart choice from the director as the movie was directed towards a younger audience and a more convoluted and complex plot would have made it very hard for a younger audience to follow, but the drawback to this was that more mature audience may feel like the movie lacks any depth which it does suffer from, but luckily the movie doesn't really take itself very seriously so it doesn't get affected by this as much as other movies would. Although the simple plot definitely worked i do feel like the more serious scenes that were included did feel out of place next to the wackiness around it, and although you could make the argument it was for comedic effect i feel like it fell flat and made Mr Maddens seem to edgy and sad whilst Mr Poppy just became very annoying by the end.
even though the plot had some problems it was enjoyable especially for a younger audience and if you went in looking for some deeper meaning obviously you wouldn't enjoy it as that's not what the movie was made to be, so the key to enjoy the movie is keep your expectations low and take it for what it is and don't try and compare it to any Oscars nominated dramas, but saying this the enjoyment for this movie starts to run out as the movie progresses as for me the comedy wasn't very funny and the dynamic between Mr Maddens and Mr Poppy gets dry fast, but the first 45 minutes are very sweet and you can tell a lot of love and effort went into it.
the one scene that did make me laugh in the movie was near the end when the kid dressed as an angel comes down from the top of the tower, this was funny for me as it was so out there and you don't really expect the school to go through with it and when it happens it is pulled off well and everyone but the parents acts as if this is perfectly normal.
i would recommend this movie to people under the age of 14 but apart from that it is hard to recommend as it is hard to draw any enjoyment during the last half of the movie except from the scene i talked about earlier
