MID 90s
In my eyes, Mid 90s is a work of art. It beautifully depicts a forgotten and largely unexplored period of time, with heartwarming and likeable characters, telling a realistic yet mundane story. What appeals so much about it to me is the rawness of the characters and the unapologetic attitude of the story. What I mean by this is that you can feel the passion and affection that has gone into making this film and the it is hard to ignore the feeling that skating is being given a platform like never before, courtesy of Jonah Hill.
Jonah Hill has (maybe accidentally) created a love letter to skating through this film. He is honouring the skaters, highlighting the many struggles they faced and illustrating the huge sense of community and unity between them. I do not know masses about skating, however it is not necessary to to enjoy the film. I felt myself respecting the characters and appreciating their talents greatly, despite not knowing in depth just how skilled they are.
I watched the film with my older brother who skates. He felt the same way about the film except he also felt grateful for it. It reminded him of the power and passion he feels when skating, the film captures this feeling perfectly.
The soundtrack really made the film for me, ranging from Nirvana to old school hip-hop with Gang Starr and Big L, complementing the time period and mood.
Everything about this film is fascinating and challenges our perceptions with the inclusion of the serious issues of drug use and physical abuse. The brutal, final twist emphasises the reality of the film and the struggle that the skaters faced. Overall, a beautiful, moving, well structured film, worthy of the passionate people who made it.
