Joker (2019)

When you think of the villains in the DC comics you think of gory abnormal characters but the joker is the total opposite, as he starts as a normal looking middle age man with no special powers. The whole film is about his psychological state and how it progresses from him trying to become a standup comedian in Gotham city to a cold hearted killer with a very strange laugh, which the actor Joaquin Phoenix based of of actual people a chronic laughing disorder. Throughout the film we get to see what lead him to become the Joker, from his harsh upbringing to how the people around him treat him from day to day. I really did like the film but it did leave me feeling quite unsettled and upset after the 2 hour long film, because it is upsetting to see anyone go through what he had to by himself because mental health is not a 'laughing' matter. In my opinion the film would have been better if it was shortened to about 1 hour and 30 minutes and ending with him putting on his joker face paint for the first time. This is the perfect start for a sequel so spreading out the one story over two films like they did with the book my Stephen Kings 'IT' splitting it into chapter 1 and 2 of the book into two films. The main deep, subconscious theme of the film is the mental health of a middle age man that is deteriorating over the years. At the start of the film he is at breaking point and no one around him can help him at this point and his actions throughout the film from start to finish starts a army of angry rich people against him and a army of angry but supportive of his actions against the rich upper class society. I do not recommend watching this film if you yourself have had any sort of experience with poor mental health, even if it was a friend or a family member. The film represents the seriousness of mental health in the world today. Joker is a very interesting film with serious undertones. On the surface the film's main plot is how the Joker became the villain of batman and became one of the most popular characters of the DC comics. After watching the film there is only one question left in my head, who was the person who killed the parents of Bruce Wayne?
