The film that I chose to review was Blade Runner. On my first watching of this film, I would give 4/5 stars.
Going into this film, I didn't really know any of the details that happen with the film. All I really knew was that it was about a replicant hunter.
In the year 2019, a company have developed robots that are used in the aid of society, these robots are called replicants. However, the replicants began to mutiny, which then made them illegal to have or be constructed on earth. Blade Runners are sent out to destroy all replicants that are on earth. Rick Deckard, a former blade runner, is called out of retirement to hunt down 4 replicants that have made their way onto earth.
The plot overall does make sense and is easy to follow once you become aware of what the situation is.
The plot I do think is believable, but believable sometime in the future when we have developed technology similar to what is shown in the film. Like flying cars and off world missions that we are not as close to as it portrays in the film.
I did enjoy the film as I was watching. One of the main reasons I enjoyed it so much is that I believe that it still holds up well, even though it was made nearly 40 years ago. I also enjoyed that world itself, and the dark city is an exciting area to be explored as the story progresses. Futhermore, another reason why I enjoyed this film was the whole concept itself. The idea of have replicants walk among us is an interesting idea and can be explored in so many different ways and can have many different stories to follow. of my main issues with the film is however, is that I did find a bit longer than I thought it was going to be. This I think I turn off casual film viewers since it was nearly 2 hours long. However, I do believe that dispite the length, it definitely deserves the praise that it gets.
The scenes that enjoyed the most from the film, were scenes nearing the end of the story.
The first one was when Deckard is hunting down the replicant, Pris. Hes looking in a room that is filled with mannequins. She is hiding in plane sight with a clear piece of fabric over head. The suspense is good in this scene as we as the audience know that she's there, but Deckard doesn't. The tension of him finding her is very well communicated in this scene.
The other memorable scene that I enjoyed was when Deckard is being chased by Roy (the leader of the 4 replicants). Deckard is hanging of the edge of the building and is eventually helped up by Roy, which is unexpected for a first time watcher who doesn't know anything about the film. My favourite part though was the speech that Roy gave to Deckard, which is probably the most memorable part of the whole film. The speech was great as it gives the audience a clear and sympathetic understanding about his stance of his short lifespan as a replicant: that memories will be forgotten like "tears in the rain".
