Chef is my favourite film. Like of all time. I'm being serious, this film is genuinely my favourite film of all time, and the simple reason for that is it is really enjoyable. It is isn't complicated or a piece of art, it is just an enjoyable film that I could watch every day and never get tired of it. Beyond that, Chef is a really good indie film directed by a great director that features an amazing soundtrack and some mouth-watering food.
The main draw and focus of the film is the food. The sequences of Karl Kasper cooking are so well filmed and scored that it makes you subconsciously drool at the thought of it. That obviously has something to do with the way it's shot, but I think the success of the cooking scenes owes more to the score.
Chef has an amazing soundtrack; it is one of the few films that has soundtrack that I will listen to daily. It is so full of life and so energetic, each song is perfectly picked for each scene. I can't speak high enough praise for it.
The acting talent is really good. Oliver Platt is a perfect food critic, John Leguizamo is very enjoyable to watch even if he's a bit of a stereo type and for a child actor, Emjay Anthony was convincing and delivered some of the most emotional moments in the film. Then Jon Favreau is the best actor in this film. Not only is he the one actually cooking the beautiful food in this movie but delivers some really solid acting. It also helps he has great chemistry with everyone in this film. The supporting cast is also really good, RDJ and Dustin Hoffman being particular highlights.
But at the heart of the film, and the reason it's my favourite film of all time is, is its simplicity. It is a simple story about a man rediscovering his passion and bonding with his son. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that and it isn't. That's why it's so enjoyable, that's why I can watch it every day consecutively for a week and that's why it's my favourite film of all time.
