Free Solo (2018)

Free solo is all about a solo climber's journey to attempt to conquer the massive El Capitan which stands at 2307m with no ropes or help from anyone. Along the way you meet lots of interesting real people who see what he is doing in different ways.

Something I enjoyed about the film was the way the directors portrayed El Capitan. They made the mountain appear as almost the final boss in a video game, something that the main character has to beat in order to win or in this case to feel complete. As this was more of a long documentary than a film it makes the people in it feel more grounded and easier to relate to as they are real people. This also has the effect of making you feel more engaged as any consequences are real and not just make believe.

I think that Free Solo has some pacing issues as it was hard to tell when one day ended and another began and this made me loose track of where I was in the documentary. However this was not a big issue as the documentary was interesting enough to put the thought to one side.

Overall I enjoyed Free Solo and I found it quite interesting. I would recommend it to documentary lovers and adventure fans alike.
