It (2017)

I went into this film expecting for it to be scary and boy was I wrong, this has one of the most boring first half of a film i’ve Ever seen and it doesn’t get much better after that.I found the phrase ‘You’ll float too’ only applied to my brain at many points in the movie.I’m finding it really hard to review this film seeing as it was barely memorable to me.

Don’t get me wrong this isn’t a terrible film I’ve seen much worse but I’ve also seen much better, you have the very start of the movie where *SPOILER ALERT(even though its common knowledge)where they kill off a little boy*its evidently just being played for shock value, thats what I feel a lot of this movie is, shock value over everything else. One of my main problems with this film is the over the top gore, now I’m not squeamish but even I flinched in some scenes in this film. Equally I’m no expert but I sincerely doubt people would bleed as much as they do in some sections of this film.

From blood to CGI,I feel like the movement of Pennywise(the clown)was so jumpy that it wasn’t actually scary, I found it hard to believe at times which was part the reason why it didn’t scare me as much as it was probably intending too.This film takes some weird directions as well, there’s one scene where your main group starts throwing rocks at the bullies and this really over the top rock music started playing; another odd scene was the one where Pennywise just started doing this over the top CGI dance. I can’t tell weather the film was attempting to be funny but there were many times where I felt myself laughing at the stupidity of the movie. There’s a particular scene where there’s a giant Pennywise that pops out a wall(you literally cannot make this stuff up)and all the characters just start shrieking “What the ****” at the top of their lungs and I just started laughing.

However this isn’t all bad, I thought that the scene with the tv telling someone to ‘kill him’ on a children’s show really was quite a scary concept, the idea of subliminal messages in children’s tv has always scared me so to have Pennywise pop up in a tv was the only real memorable thing that really stuck with me and kind of scared me but then they had to ruin it by there literally having blood spraying out of someone’s body in the most over-the-top manner,Thats my main problem with this film, the bits without the over the top effect(be that the blood or the CGI)are actually really good more scary than when there was a tonne of effects but I feel as though the effects just take you away from being invested in the world they’re building and was just never scared properly due to this which is the main job of a horror film.
