The Breadwinner is a stunning fantasy animation set in Afghanistan. The film follows a young girl living under the Taliban rule, and the journey she faces as she changes her identity in order to provide for her family all while planning a rescue mission, after her father was wrongly arrested.
The film is rated a 12 i feel a though this is a fair rating due to the severity of the issues it deals with and also the slightly graphic scenes of violence. The film based on the novel written by Deborah Ellis deals with sexism and the mistreatment of woman in the Taliban controlled Kabul.
This fantasy film transports you into the mind and life of a young girl living in a Taliban-controlled city. Along with the main plot there is also a side plot, the side plot starts as a bedtime story she tells her younger brother however it quickly turns into a journey much similar to her own, both characters on a quest to retrieve something important that has been taken away from them. This heart-warming story line is paired with gorgeous animations which bring the city of Kabul and the characters which live there to life
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, it dealt with the important issues in a beautiful way that allowed younger viewers to understand.
The beautiful animations and story line allowed us as viewers to really connect with the characters and get a feeling of what a young person goes through on a daily basis in Afghanistan.
