Steven Spielberg's biopic of Lincoln is a superb example of the best of filmmaking.
Incredible performances from the cast are simply absorbing. Of course, Daniel Day-Lewis embodies Lincoln in every conceivable way but just as impressive, performances from Tommy Lee-Jones and Sally field bring to light some of the lesser known characters behind the story of the 13th amendment in both an informative and engaging way. The sharp dialogue from Kushner fills the 2 and half hour runtime of the movie, where most would drag, Lincoln never oversteps its boundary, a hard task for any movie. What impresses me most about this movie is just how Spielberg does not use his usual "flashy" style of directing, but instead uses subtle camera movements to convey the story. Contrasting the noticeable directorial choices he utilises in other movies. Needlesstosay, the movie on a technical level is infallible when it comes to the atmosphere and set pieces, in every second you believe that 19th century America is presented before you.
Therefore, I would say Lincoln is a triumph and a definite must-see for anyone who has any interest in history or film making.
Print this reviewDaniel Day Lewis gives an unforgettable performance as an increasingly alienated oil prospector in the America of the 1900s.
