Queen of Katwe
Queen of Katwe is about a sad but happy girl, she enjoys her life living with her mum, brothers and sister. She is called Phiona, her sister is called Night and brothers are called Richard and Brian. They lived in Kampala, Uganda. This is a fantastic book and movie based on a true story. It came out this year (2017). This is sad but it will definitely catch your attention.
Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), lives in a slum on the outskirt of Kampala. Her life hasn’t been too good: carrying water; travelling quite a few miles to “The spring” were she gets her water; buying food from the man, who then says “I will pay the money next week or tomorrow.” She walks home happy, “look mama there is food for all of us” (Beans and rice). Night (Taryn Kyaze) is the oldest sister but she doesn’t listen. She goes out with this boy called Theo who is rich and loves Night.
She leave her mum and her brothers and sister, because she thinks Theo would buy her everything she wanted and he did. She got clothes and a new hairstyles, all set of things. She lived with him and every night she would come but everyone’s asleep, only Phiona is awake thinking about her.
One day she was on her way to get water, when she came across a team called Katwe she looked through and they let her in. Boys called her pig because she smelt. She was very calm but stubborn. The boss was called Coach (David Oyelowo) and he gave her food to eat. She still got bullied but Coach, Robert Katende told a girl called Gloria (Nakita Waligwa) to teach her how to play chess. After that Gloria said “Okay move now you smell.” The next day she washed and entered. “Yay the pig has washed,” said Joseph (Edgar Kanyike). She came every day in the morning to learn chess by Gloria, who taught her until class was over. After quite long (3 weeks or more) she became the master, she accidently made Benjamin (Ethan Nazario Lubega) cry because he was the champion.
They entered lots of tournaments, some victory some eliminated, but they got so much trophies but not a good house. She went world-wide to earn trophies for a group, on planes and vans. After all that she got a little spoilt about chess then she stopped because her coach and mum were telling her to stop. She wouldn’t get up to do her morning chores then she got back to doing that and living a normal life. Night was pregnant she left Richard at home on his own when there was a flood, he almost drowned.
Overall I thought that the film was good because it was based on a true story: I liked the part where they were playing chess because it was full of suspense.
