It is a western monster film and it makes a good combination of those people and a monster that comes from God knows where apart from being in the desert area. It’s about creatures called Grabboids and they’re underneath the sand trying to terrorise and kill people who live there. The characters were funny, Kevin Bacon made his one very likeable and he had good co-star which seemed to make both characters look like a western comedy duo, it’s like this movie should have its own TV series spin off, a sitcom perhaps but with them two and the other cast with no giant worm multiple snake tongue thing. There is one character that I didn’t like because he wasn’t taking the whole ‘We got to stop this killing now’ seriously and I’m glad to see that he nearly got his just desserts and realise he’s in the eye of danger. The setting was good for the type of monster invading the people’s premises, emerging from sand is brilliant because it unveils what it is with bits of sand on it to slowly show what it is without revealing its presence to quickly to make someone question ‘What is it? It’s like drawing the curtains to introduce someone’s icon on stage, it has that feel. They were some things I hated, I didn’t like the effect use of the Grabboids, in the scenes where they showed, when there was one shot after another of them trying to attack, it was like one minute they were real and one minute they were puppets, to me they had some metamorphosis disorder going on. The sounds of the Grabboids gave me a couple of jump scares but that’s what monsters sounds do and it’s not going to make me say ‘This thing is not scary enough’ because it is, it scared me and made me laugh. The camera got perfect imageries of the desert environment, it seemed to do two things at once, have a wide open shot of the desert area whilst still keeping the characters without going off topic of what the main story is about, and do you know what… it worked. I liked the colours of the sand, it was a detailed tone to the setting and I found this bit funny but it’s silly as well, when a humorous scene involving a Grabboid and showing their blood happened, the blood looked like gravy mixed in with a pile of vomit. This film is perfect for people who love a combinations of certain settings and certain characters/creatures. If you love sci-fi with aliens and western films, I recommend giving this film a go and putting it in your favourite film section.
