Bride & Prejudice (2004)

The film Bride and Prejudice is a spoof of the book Pride and Prejudice. The film is set in India with a family called the Bakshis who meet a wealthy English man who has Indian roots called Balraj, his sister and their friend from America called Will Darcie. Balraj and his sister as well as Darcie are invited to an indian arranged marriage. While at the wedding they meet the Bakshis. Balraj and Will take a liking to their daughters Lalita and Jaya. Throughout the movie, new twists in the story take place and the characters perspective of each other changes rapidly, from love to hate. This film has clear links to Indian culture and family. It explains that in India there is a very high pressure to get married very quickly. Marriage is arranged and there is this idea that once married, love will grow. Throughout the film you see Mrs Bakshis trying to set one of her children up with rich Indian husbands. In India they still have a dowry, this means that men get money from the wife's parents to promote marriage. Though there are some aspects of the movie that aren’t realistic, like constant singing and dancing, there are some very true facts. For instance: the Garba (a hindu dance) and that like I said there are still dowrys. I rate this film 8.5/10 due to its clear connection to Indian culture. Oliver Cowles
