This movie was out of this world! Simply space-tacular! Dare I say Mars-vellous?
Matt Damon can do no wrong. This must have been an extremely challenging part to play. It's difficult to play - a man stranded on Mars, miles and miles away from home when you can't do any research on the character and their feelings. It's has never happened before. You can only imagine what it would be like, and based on his performance in this film (with nothing but a novel to help), it is fair to say that Damon has a pretty incredible imagination.
The whole way through the movie, I was perched on the end of my seat. The graphics were incredible. It wasn't up to the standard of Gravity's breath-taking photography, but it was still amazing.
There isn't much to say about the plot: a man gets trapped on Mars. But throughout the film, you get an idea of the character. You understand his interests, his family life, his sense of humour and so on. But there is one key trait which this man clings onto throughout the film: a will to live.
Then, of course, you have Astronaut Mark Watney's fellow crew members. They fight to save their friend, and they never stop fighting. They risk their lives to save a man; one cannot help but feel inspired by this defiant act of courage.
At the end, you have the generic tea-sipping moment which allows the viewer to reflect on the film. I was expecting myself to criticize and nit-pick every scene, but all I could think was: wow!
I would recommend this movie, without a doubt. But there are some scenes which may be a little to graphic or intense for young children under 13. I found some parts a little too much on the scary side.
So whether you watch this movie alone, with your friends or with your family, remember: help is just 140 million miles away.
Enjoy!
