The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The Blair Witch Project is the first rendition of a found footage it revolves around three film students who are doing a documentary on the Blair Witch a murderer who was tried for witchcraft and left hanging in the woods they lived locally in the area of Burkittsville, Maryland, the three students try to document on the story as well as trying to find out if the legend itself is even true. They first go around the town and ask locals if they have heard about this and some believe it to be true others do not, one woman who everyone believes is crazy apparently saw her but no one believed it to be true. The students then travel to the sites of murders and other key points of the Blair witch story and document as well as try to find evidence of the Blair witch being there. After a few nights the team loses there way causing arguments and this leads to them losing their map and unable to find a way out of the forest this then leads to series of unfortunate events as the students start becoming scared and paranoid as they believe they’ll never find their way out. In the night strange occurrences start as the students fall closer and closer to their demise in an end that stays true to itself. The camera angles used were those of first-person view (FOV) it makes you feel as if your there with the characters taking each step with them as you follow their tale into the truth of the Blair Witch. The movie was ok, watching it didn’t scare me just because you could only really go off the characters emotions and expressions as you never saw the enemy of the story. So the only thing that may give you a bit of tension is the night segments which only creep you out as if you can’t see the enemy all you can do is hear strange noises. In the end if you compare this movie to those made today you can see a difference in style and quality I could imagine that when this was first released it may of scared some people as it was new but now it doesn’t hold up compared to the others that we see today.
