Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Moulin Rouge is one of my favourite musicals of all time. But there is one thing that sets this musical apart from others. That is that the songs used in this movie were actual pop songs sang originally by stars such as Madonna, Elton John and others, that have been changed around and sang to a different tune. The basic plot of Moulin Rouge is about Christian, (played by Ewan McGregor)a writer who arrives in a small town in France in 1899 - and lands right in the middle of the 'Bohemian Revolution'. After some strange events including:an unconscious, Narcoleptic Argentinian falling through his ceiling and seeing a dwarf dressed as a nun, he ends up being the writer for a play at the Moulin Rouge called 'Spectacular, Spectacular'. In order for Christian and his group of associates to get their play idea put forward, Christian has to meet with Satine - a courtesan from the Moulin Rouge (played by Nicole Kidman), and introduce her to the play. And here's where things get complicated... the Duke has arranged a meeting with Satine at the same time as Christian because the Duke is thinking in investing in the Moulin Rouge to make it a theatre.There is then complications Satine falls in love with Christian but they must keep it hidden as the Duke wants her all for himself. Of course this is happening in the middle of planning for the play which is pretty much just an Indian/Hindu version of the movie plot but with the characters replaced with other characters. Unfortunately, Satine has been suffering from an unknown illness that has been hurting her since the start of the movie. What I really love about this movie is the soundtrack. I love the way that this movie took already famous songs and made them into different styles such as swing which they did with many of the songs. My favourite song in the movie is 'Come What May' because I do not think that it was already a song so they wrote it and I love the romance and the harmonies in it. I also liked the strangeness of the plot because the slight humour put in makes it so much more fun among the seriousness of the movie. In conclusion, I think this is one of the best movie-musicals around and I recommend it to audiences over 12. 5/5
